I have yet to be given the correct information to fix my problem with installing Sun Java, why?

Asked by carolyn crownover

This is ongoing and this was the last response I received which doesn't say very much and certainly did not answer nor fix the problems that I am having: I am using Ubuntu 8.04. Your question #84228 on xulrunner-1.9 in ubuntu changed:

Luky Winarto proposed the following answer:
Carolyn, I will answer #2:

#2: There's a problem with your terminal, isn't it? In order to solve it, I gave you the solution from the URL before.
"I figured out that somehow the option for "Run a custom command instead of my shell" became clicked under the "Title and Command" tab in "Profile Preferences". I hope this helps others with this strange deal." (from: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+question/60506)

My questions is what ubuntu version do you using now?
Cheerss...

"trying to install java for my class assignment"

Which Java? What Java? There are 2 usual packages JRE (Java Runtime Environment - the most common) and JDK (Java Development Kit - larger and not used by most people)

"gcjwebplugin"

More fully known as "icedtea-gcjwebplugin". If you are aiming at sun-java then you have no need of icedtea or openjdk.

If you have a reasonable download speed, open Synaptic Package Manager and search for: ubuntu-restricted-extras

Then from Synaptic Package Manager install it. It will download and install various helpful things things - including JRE

In you previous post it says " This product does not support the web browser you are using." Which web browser are you using?

as arochester says:

is it JRE for browser plugins, or is it JDK for Java development?

You need to clarify this.

sun java 5, that is what I was told from the launchpad group. I was told to look for gcjwebplugin and install sun java 5 plugin packages. I tried this but no so luck because in the list there was to java 5 plugin package. Then I was told to open System>Admin>Synaptic Package Manager and search Sun Java6 plugin Right Click and mark for installation and no such luck, i received an error message (page whitelist)

Why did you ask me this ?is it JRE for browser plugins, or is it JDK for Java development?

You guys are the experts, how should I know. You need to tell me, which is which

Well you should know what you want.

Do you want to program in Java to develop applications or do you want to view java applets in your browser?

I'm using both Web Browser 3.5 and phoenity next Firefox 3.0.13 - alternately - with an install of Ubuntu 9.04 ( the update fixed a sound system failure on 8.04 ). I've been quipping with Dr. Jojn v. Kampen at My Opera Nepmak 2000 and noticed a post at Kioskea http://en.kioskea.net/ which suggested opening Terminal and typing 'cpulimit -e process -1 40' or alternatively 'cpu limit -p 130 -1 40' L: unhappily I get a message saying the command is not recognized and I should install cpulimit.
Firefox has been using all available resources and 'freezing'. I get a notifier asking me if I want to stop a process hogging resources - which eventually provides temporary help. When things are at their worst, rebooting seems the only cure.
Flashplayer controls installed include both native Ubuntu software and Adobe! Uninstalling Ubuntu Flash controls is not a step I have taken yet. Any ideas ?

p.s. 'Do I want to program in Java ?' That question is almost funny. I'm oldephartte trying to thrash my way around online. Programming is Terra Incognita ( Unknown Territory )

Its a perfectly reasonable question.

I recommend you run:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

It will also install a java web browser plugin

Of course the question is REASONABLE ! That wasn't being challenged. Thanks for your help. I ran into downloading problems which I have to sort out before I can tell if a solution is operational : plus I have to run.

Can you help with this problem?
