It's probably because this netbook uses an Atom N2800, which is a Cedar Trail processor.
The graphic card is integrated in the processor, and is probably not supported by the linux kernel of Ubuntu 10.04.
It seems to be unsupported by Ubuntu 11.10 too. See https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+question/187618

I would suggest to try with Ubuntu 12.04 (recently released as a beta version) : http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/download
You can run it from CD or USB without installing, just to check if the screen resolution is better.

Ubuntu 12.04 (final version) should be ready in the end of April 2012. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin/ReleaseSchedule
It will ship with a kernel 3.2. I read somewhere that initial support of Cedar Trail was implemented in kernel 3.1 (without hardware acceleration?).
So it's worth trying

I too have that poblem running Ubuntu 11.10 on an EeePC 1025C. I've tried running 'live' 12.04 Beta and the problem persists.

Same problem. And I hardly know anything about computers so I've been searching for a solution for 3 effing days!

I was going to settle with Meego until the release of Tizen, but I decided to install the 32 bit Windows 8 preview ISO and (after encountering the same problem and more dead ends) I visited the ASUS site, downloaded and installed the Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator Driver (click on VGA in the menu) and my problem was finally solved.

Don't know if it works with Ubuntu. Don't drivers get installed on a partition separate from operating systems?

Don't bother answering that. I've had enough of these kind of forums to last me a lifetime.

My good deed is done and I'm gone.

Similar problem with Asus 1011CX (Intel Atom N2600) working with 12.04

Solved using:

http://daily.siebler.eu/2012/06/ubuntu-12-04-driver-for-intel-cedarview-atom-n2000-und-d2000-serie/

This problem affects Cedar View and Cedar Trail chipsets (new Intel Atom chipsets with memory & graphics integrated controllers):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Atom_microprocessors

Som users say that the problem is solved with Quantal (12.10), but I prefer LTS editions.

12.04 (Precise) is LTS (Long Term Service).

I confirm that the issue is solved in 12.10 ( at the moment an alpha release).

It looks like the driver has now been backported to 12.04 : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/jockey/+bug/1026518. So it should work with version 12.04.1 (due at the end of August 2012)

When I say it should work with 12.04.1 (or with current 12.04 with all updates), I just mean it's worth trying.
Based on this backport, there's a reasonable chance it would work. But I don't have such a device and could not test anything

Asus 1011CX (Intel Atom N2600) working with 12.04 up-to-date (29-setember-2012)

1. Go to [System Parameters] [Additional Drivers]
2. Activate cedarview-drm
3. Reboot. In my case I needed to reboot from Ctl+Alt+F1 (no-graphic terminal) because graphic server went out.
4. Go next time to [System Parameters] [Additional Drivers]
5. Activate cedarview-graphics-drivers
6. System resolution ok, at 1024x600. Unity 2D.
