Does Ubuntu work well on Cedar Trail ATOM?

Asked by CHANG-HOON OH

Hi there,
I wonder if currently released version of ubuntu(11.10) works well on Cedar Trail ATOM (i.e. N2600 or N2800) from Intel. Or does 12.04 happen to support them? Is there anyone who have tried it?

You know, Cedar Trail ATOMs(N2600/N2800) are the successor of Pine Trail ATOMs(N5xx/N4xx). And the products using them are just popping up in the netbook market these days. But, of course, the samples must have shipped last year to the Netbook company before.

Many thanks in advance.

I don't know.

My bet is that now with 11.10 you'd probably get no hw graphics acceleration or maybe just 2D acceleration.

I think the biggest problem is the new graphics hw, which is powervr-based.

This isn't really all that new, because Pine Trail has been out a while and uses similar powervr graphics (GMA500 aka Poulsbo).

Somebody at Intel is working on "clean room" open source driver for pine trail and cedar trail.

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTYyNw

But I doubt it will ever work as well as the closed source driver (e.g. will never have 3D or video acceleration).

Intel released MeeGo for Cedar Trail. https://meego.com/downloads/releases/1.2/meego-v1.2-netbooks

So I'm hoping they can include the binary blob driver from MeeGo in Ubuntu.

Richard, thank you for your kind opinion.

So... you think that there will be limitted support on Cedar Trail's Graphic drivers even on 12.04? Am I right?

Then, what do you think about Cedar Trail CPU portion? Does the linux kernel in the ubuntu 11.10 support it without any errors? You might think that my question is a little bit strange on x86 platform but embedded systems using ARM are sometimes very unstable if the kernel doesn't support the ARM SOCs.

Is it a good season of my purchasing the Cedar Trail Netbook from ASUS or Samsung ?

I'm just guessing, but I think besides the graphics you would only possibly have problems with the wifi (depending on the chip actually used) or the usb 3.0 if the model you want comes with usb 3.0. Other than that, I'm pretty sure it would work. Ubuntu does have closed source drivers for quite a few of the wireless chips though. The silly thing is they don't come in the install image. You get an icon telling you the driver is available, but then you have to download it over the wired connection.

I'm personally waiting for the Lenovo s200 (11.6" and looks like it's fanless, like my Dell Mini 10v).

I plan to get the S200 when it comes out this summer and try to do whatever it takes to make Ubuntu work.

I don't really see any advantage of atom over the AMD e-450 other than the possibility of fanless operation. It amazes me that there aren't more fanless Cedar Trail models announced and that even when they are fanless, almost nobody mentions it.

Hello
To answer the question
The graphics card is not supported (Intel GMA 3650 => N2800).
Tested on two laptops and Clevo W253CUQ W251CUQ
- Ubuntu 11.10 you will be unity in 2D but a lower resolution (1024x768 instead of 1366x768) If not for the rest everything works.
- Ubuntu 12.04 beta 1 not output video, black screen, can not install!

there will soon hit the market many Atom N2800
it will damage the final precise does not support the graphics card!
call to dev.

Sorry for my english I'm french.

Asus 1011CX (Intel Atom N2600) working with 12.04 up-to-date (29-setember-2012)

1. Go to [System Parameters] [Additional Drivers]
2. Activate cedarview-drm
3. Reboot. In my case I needed to reboot from Ctl+Alt+F1 (no-graphic terminal) because graphic server went out.
4. Go next time to [System Parameters] [Additional Drivers]
5. Activate cedarview-graphics-drivers
6. System resolution ok, at 1204x600. Unity 2D.

Hi,

Despite the presence of the Cedarview drivers in the repositories, there are still issues for some users.

Some configurations require modification in the grub config file, to change the display manager... and to stay on Ubuntu 12.04 (and not 12.10). More ever, the 3D is not working.
A work around exists: using VESA drivers, but the VESA resolutions are limited and could not match the resolution of your LCD screen. More ever, it does not use the "power" of the graphic chips.
To summarize, if you are unsure the configuration you plan to purchase is working, there is a risk to have a system not fully operational.
