Bug Description

Save dialog boxes do not appear on save command. I am using Windows XP SP2 and Inkscape 0.47. The save dialog box does not draw. The program goes into "waiting for an entry mode" with the usual bonk. I can release this mode by pressing ESC.

sorry, I did not express that very well. What I meant was, if you perform a Right-Mouse-Button click on the desktop, and select Properties, and then select the tab called "Themes", does it say "Windows Classic", or "Windows XP", or have you customized your desktop theme in any way?

also, if you pretend the dialog is there, and type in a filename such as test.svg and hit Enter, does it change the file name on the main Inkscape screen as it should?

Alvin,

Right click on desktop shows a modified XP theme. The modification just
replaced the picture with a plain blue background.

If I hit the save command in the drop down off the file menu and type in a
file name and hit enter, the file name appears on the top bar. I can
continue working on the drawing and re-hitting the save button updates the
file. Still, no dialog box appears. I was about to give up on the program
but now I have hope.

Thanks for your help.

- thanks for the feedback
- with respect to the theme, mine sounds the same as yours. I'm on Windows XP, and I have changed the background image and the taskbar color, so when I interrogate Display Properties I get my theme shown as "Windows XP (Modified)", with other options labelled as "Windows XP" and "Windows Classic". In any event, this is not causing a problem on my machine.

- I wonder if there is a remote chance that the Save As... dialog is completely hidden behind Inkscape. Normally one runs Inkscape maximized, so you cannot check to see what is behind it. Could you try running the Inkscape window as resizeable and movable, and move it well off-screen before you call up the Save As.. dialog?

Ran Inkscape as you suggested and moved the program window nearly off the
screen. I gave the Save As command. For a brief moment, (< a second), I
could see a box image form in the upper left quadrant of the screen. It
disappeard. Form some reason the box image is transient.

I think i've found the cause of tht problem, or at least a workaround. I used winspector (a program that lists all windows and lets you examine their properties) to find the inkscape's save dialog, and here's how info about window geometry looks like this:

Class Name #32770
Rectangle 371, 205, 932, 205
Size 561, 0
Client Rectangle 0, 0, 555, 0
Client Size 555, 0

So it seems that inkscape somehow manages to create a window with zero width.

As a workaround i created a tiny autohotkey script (autohotkey is a freeware windows scripting utility, www.autohotkey.com) that waits for the save dialog window to appear and then forces it into arbitrary size and position:

loop
{
 winWait Select file ahk_class #32770
 WinMove,ahk_class #32770,, 100, 300, 560, 390
}

All you need to do is paste the above four lines into a text file, change its extension to .ahk and run it. As long as the script is running, any inkscape save dialog will become visible. Of course you need autohotkey installed first ;) If you use inkscape in other language than English you might need to change the words "Select file" to your language. It's just the beginning of save dialog's titlebar text: "Select file to save to". I added it as an additional filter so that autohotkey doesn't resize some other window but it should be safe to remove if you don't remember what this text was in your language.
