Try again. OO Windows are too washed out to use

Asked by kapthar on 2011-10-23

We will try again to use the latest Ubuntu. We upgraded and find that the windows are so washed out (light) that we can't see most of the verbiage. We asked for help before but did not find an answer. How can we get windows defined with better visibility?
No answer is better than a bad answer. Please, don't respond with a pointer to previously answered questions, we have been there, done that.
Thanks

There is a file to download as well as a location, may help

Also try adding:

export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen

to the bottom of ~/.bashrc

In https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+question/174794 you used the abbreviation OO as though you meant Oneiric Ocelot. Is that what you mean here, too? We've been assuming you were referring to OpenOffice.org, as that is the only software product that is commonly referred to as OO. (The standard shortening of Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot is simply: "Oneiric")

If you just mean that *all* your windows for *all* applications are poorly visible, please let us know, and please also provide a screenshot if possible. (Launchpad questions don't support attachments, so you'll have to post it on the web somewhere like http://imageshack.us and post a link to it here.

My apologies.
I did mean Oneiric Ocelo. I have tried to implement two of the color configurations from Ubuntu but I can not see the apps well enough to even implement them correctly. I am completely out of options.I am using a AMD 64 from HP and the windows were fine with previous releases. I have to now back uo to my unwelcome MS system.I wonder if I can reinstall the Natty version and bring it up to speed with updates.ThanksKap

Natty is still supported (including with security and important stability updates -- the same level of support as Oneiric or any other currently supported non-LTS release), and will be through October 2012. Downgrading is not supported, but you can offload your documents and other important files, and then perform a fresh installation.

If you want more help trying to configure your Oneiric system to work as you like, then please set the question's status back to Open. (To do that, post with the "I Still Need An Answer" button at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+question/175867.)

We eventually had to reload Natty on two of our machines. WE moved from Ubuntu back to MS on 8 more. We like Ubuntu but were really put off by the 11.10 version. We use the systems for work and can not afford to keep reloading them with every change. We will continue to hope and try Ubuntu but we will be a lot more careful next time before putting it on more than one machine.

Still hoping.

Natty and Maverick are still very supported and very developed. Natty is supported well past the life of Oneiric too. Could use those

Good thought. Thanks

Natty is *not* supported past Oneiric. Natty is supported through October of 2012. Oneiric is supported through April of 2013. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29 or https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases.

Thanks. We will continue with Natty as long as possible.

I wonder if this is a problem with compiz (perhaps with visual effects).

Had you tried selecting "Ubuntu 2D" as your session type on the login screen? Perhaps that would ameliorate the problem. (If you don't still have an Oneiric system, but you want to try this, you could try this on an Oneiric live CD/DVD/USB.)

kaphar (captain-harry) said : #13

Thanks. We did try it with no noticeable improvement. We will look for the next release and test it to see if it is viable.
