You are not with 8.04 release you are using the Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy release and it is no more supported.

Please read https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+question/69463
and consider to install the 8.04 LTS (Long Time Support Release).

Hope this helps

Sorry there is a typo in my previous answer you need to open the file /etc/apt/sources.list
and not /etc/apt/source.list so type:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

As a general suggestion to be sure your system is fully updated/upgraded using terminal you can sometimes.

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(if the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo dpkg --configure -a

then to update and upgrade and also check pending or missing packages, still using terminal type:

sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

Please close this question marking it as solved thank you.

Hope this helps
