I updated the 7.04 once, but when I check on the updates there are many of them but I can't update them because of the error.

7.10 &7.04 are no longer supported and the repositories have been withdrawn to make room for 9.04 & the alpha 'repos' of 9.10. To upgrade to the newly released 9.04 with 1.5 years support or the 8.04-LTS (long term support, which lasts until 2010, March, i believe) please download and make a Cd of either 8.04 or 9.04 from

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Making the Cd should be quite easy, i find that really cheap 'write once' cd's from a supermarket are better than specialist and more expensive cds/dvds for this (although not for data storage). Simply put the blank cd in the drive and double click on the dowloaded iso file. If you do have trouble this link should help or let us know if you need to find another way to do this ...
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

Booting from the Cd should be easy but here's a help guide again just in case ...
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

Then backup your /home folder to an external drive or dvds or a separate partition and install but choose the "Manula Partitioning" rather than "Guided" or anything and make sure that all the boxes are UNticked in the "Format Partition?" column. Alos set the main Ubuntu partition's "Mount Point" to "/" as the / mark shows the installer where to put the bulk of the OS.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Thanks for the answer, I think I will try to do that again. Once I bought a CD with a magazine that had linux unbuntu 8.10 on it and was not able to install it on my computer. i don't remember what the error message was. This was the first Ubuntu I installed and was able to get a little update as well following the answers from Q&A on the internet. It works great so far I think I am on my way to abandon Windows all together. i thank all the guys who are helping us the newbies.

Lol, thanks, you are welcome :)
Downloading or getting a Cd from "ShipIt"
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
often gets a much better Cd than one from a magazine.

Most of us keep a working Windows as part of the dual boot setup described here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

It's especially useful during migration to linux as it means you can easily pop back into Windows for things that are easier there until you're more used to ubuntu but even after that it's good to be able to go back into Windows for odd things here and there. Xp is particularly good at working well with Ubuntu in this way. Mainly tho it's just incredibly awkward trying to install Windows so it's worth avoiding uninstalling (or wiping) it because inevitably you'll probably need it for something stupid just after doing that ;)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
