I need help getting latest Ubuntu onto my HP a350n

Asked by Gerard Baldyga

I downloaded latest Ubuntu onto a cd, and tried to install on my HP a350n.
Seems there is problem getting it to boot from bios because of a virus.
Or, do HP's have problem because they boot from factory cd's ?
I hit the F1 but the standard HP screen asks the normal "boot from last good", ect., and I can't seem to get anywhere with this.
Can anyone help me out with instalation? Thanks, Gerry

The Windows XP op system that came with computer is corrupted with a nasty virus, and I am trying to salvage computer by installing Ubuntu.

Press F11 and F12 at boot and a boot option menu should appear, choose CD.

thanks; I tried that, no luck. All I get to is the black screen (Windows Advanced Menu Options) which is from the F8 key.
I have tried F1 and F2 also. Am wondering if I am wasting my time trying to change operating system; but it was a good computer, and it seems a shame to let a malicious virus get the best of it. I hear that I do not have to wipr or change the hard drive...that when I install Ubuntu, it does that, at the time of instalation. I am looking foward to seeing Ubuntu on the screen; I just hope someone out there has had same computer and knows how to do this. Your help is much appreciated.

I had some problem with installing the latest version on my old old laptop, because it wouldn't boot.
Try installing the PC with the latest Ubuntu LTS release (10.04). That worked for me.

that is what the problem is...I haven't been able to get the computer to allow the install.
This is where I need "help" ! Not sure all computers are the same when it comes to getting bios to allow reboot from non factory cd...HP seems to want the disk set that came with computer when it was purchased. I believe that Ubuntu Linux would just allow me to pop in the cd and be on my way, but I am still trying...with the latest Ubuntu download.

have been turing on & off for last 1/2 hour, I can not get to the bios screen anymore. It only goes to F8 screen and windows start up back to virus corrupted op system. I did get the bios screen a few days back and click onto boot from cd drive, but the cd drive green light blinks, goes out and windows starts back up. Very frustrating !

Try other function keys like F2, F10 or F12.

That is very unlikely to be due to malware on your Windows system. It is likely to be due to a bad .iso image or bad CD/DVD burn or USB flash drive write.

Did you MD5 test the .iso image before you burned it to CD/DVD or wrote it to the USB flash drive? (See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM.) If not, please do that now. If that doesn't check out, you'll have to redownload the .iso image, MD5 test the new image, and (assuming the new one checks out) burn a new disc or write it to the USB flash drive again.

Did you verify that the live CD/DVD/USB was written correctly and is readable by the machine on which you're installing? To do that, boot from it, and immediately when you see the person and keyboard icons at the bottom center of the screen, press Spacebar, select your language, and select "Check disc for defects". (This goes for USB flash drives as well as CD's and DVD's.) If that doesn't check out, you'll have to burn a new disc or re-write the .iso image to the USB flash drive (and run this test on it again).

I rebooted the installation again; this time without clicking on encryption box.
And, it went successfully !
But now that I have Ubuntu 11.04 as an OS, it only gives me Mazilla Firefox as a
browser, and...when I try to access yahoo from it, it tells me over & over I am
not giving the correct password (which I know that I am).
Also, when I try to get to my facebook account, it doesn't let me go there
either.

So, it seems I am still in a stalemate, and needing help with making adjustments
to this. Thanks !

If this (your problems authenticating with websites in Firefox) is happening on a successfully installed Ubuntu system (i.e., the system runs without the CD/DVD or USB flash drive in the computer), then it is a separate problem, almost certainly unrelated to your previous problems. Assuming that is the case, you should mark this question as Solved (you can do that at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+question/164974) and post a new question about your Firefox problem (https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+addquestion).
