My computer does not restart after installing Ubuntu 12.04

Asked by Andrew Crome

I have installed Ubuntu 12.o4 onto an Acer Aspire one happy 2 but for some stupid reason it will not restart both after installing Ubuntu and after either installing programs or installing updates I have to physically turn off then re boot. Does any one have any idea what is happening? the computer had two os windows 7 starter and android, when Ubuntu was installed both of these os were removed. I have used ubuntu in the past and found it very good but not sure what is the problem here. I nstalled from a USB stick don't have a cd.

Help !!!!!

So when you click the cog and select restart it doesn't completely reboot. Is that correct?

Wheather I click the cog or when the window pops up asking me torestart is the same it just will not restart/reboot it just goes to a blank screen and goes quiet no activity just a light on my start button. I have to physically press the button to turn off and then press again to restart and I find all upgrades etc have been installttadly this is the first time I have tried ubuntu on this computered. I have never had this problem before with other versions of ubuntu. Admitadly it is the first time on this computer an aceraspire one happy two intel atom N570 after it restarts it works perfectly.

I have used ubuntu before ( maverick meercat and natty nahwale)on a Toshiba Portege R500 and had no problems but on this latest computer arrgh ! its an Acer Aspire one happy two running an Intel Atom N570 (1.66GHZ) in the installing process all goes well Its just it will not restart ! This never happened with the other computer nor with the other versions of ubuntu.

When it eventually restarts all goes well

All I can recommend is that you report a bug.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS for your system too

I have the same problem. I posted a bug report but I haven't a solution for the moment (Bug #1020377). I tested the kernel 3.5 and this solve the problem. But after I uninstalled it because is only for tests.

Until there is an update for this issue, you can do the following. Rather than shut down choose log off. In the next screen choose shut down or restart it works for me.

Sorry for my english. My language is spanish.

I finally worked out the problem its in the grub menu

I typed sudo gedit /etc/default/grub Where it says: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" change this to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="reboot=efi"

also where it says "quiet splash" change this to no splash

save this

then type sudo update-grub now all works as it should it restarts as it should.

The problem of the restart is in the grub menu pretty poor all things considered and the time wasted trying to fix this
