How to re-install KUBUNTU

Asked by John Rosing

I installed UBUNTU 9.4 and then installed KDE and then updated KUBUNTU. Everything worked on KUBUNTU before the update. After that the keyboard no longer functioned. My tech support person told me that the Kernel is wrong that I must remove and re-install KUBUNTU from a CD. I am using that CD as a live copy of KUBUNTU to write this question. (Although I can open my installed KUBUNTU using my mouse, I can not use my keyboard to write this question nor to enter my password when requested.
QUESTION #1: Is the keyboard disconnect, caused after updates, a KUBUNTU system bug that can be retroactively fixed?
QUESTION #2: If a useful solution to this problem is the removal of what I have done and the subsequent installation from this live CD is prudent, then HOW DO I UN-INSTALL KUBUNTU in the existing partition (approximately 50 GiB) ?

1) Make sure that you reboot with your keyboard plugged in.

2) Open a Terminal and input the command: sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup
(No keyboard - highlight the command above, RIGHT click on it and choose Copy, move the cursor into the Terminal, RIGHT click and choose Paste)

Does this offer you the options to reconfigure the keyboard? Use up and down arrows.

2) You don't need to uninstall Kubuntu, you just need to reinstall in the same place - it will overwrite

I can not get to this thread in my installed KUBUNTU. I am responding to your comment in a live session of the CD KUBUNTU. I don't believe that my saved message "sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup" will remain when I log out of the live program and back in in my installed program.

How do I reinstall UBUNTU in the same place? The live CD program has an "Install" icon, which when used starts out by requesting a choice for a new partition. How can I avoid creating a new partition? then position myself into the "RIGHT"? partition and proceed with the "over-install" process?

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCdRecovery#Update%20Failure

That link should help.

Once you do the chroot, I would also suggest : sudo apt-get install linux-generic

If you run into any errors or trouble, please post the full text of the errors.

I attempted to follow these instructions. My partition structure is reported as /dev/sda1; 2; 5; 6 as well as /dev/sdc1; 2; 5; 6 where #1 and 2 are NTFS and #5 is LINUX and #6 is LINUX SWAP. The "apt-get update" found no new updates. the "apt-get install linux-generic" indicated that the latest versions are installed and that two files were no longer needed and that an "autoremove" command would remove them. This resulted in 2.6.28-11 generic and 2.6.28-11 to be removed freeing approximately 74MiB of space. Subsequent attempt at using the installed KUBUNTU failed to free up the keyboard. This message is posted by way of the LIVE CD version of KUBUNTU.

The Link "https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCdRecovery#Update%20Failure" referred to an update that prevented the booting. My failure does not mean that the installed KUBUNTU will not boot. It merely disables the keyboard while permitting the mouse to function.

Maybe you could try reinstalling your kernels. So, chrooting as above in that link, then run the following:

sudo mount /proc <------ This line may or may not be necessary. I'm not too sure.
sudo apt-get purge linux-image-*
sudo apt-get autoremove --purge
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get install linux-generic

And then maybe for good measure: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop^
The ^ is not a typo

If that doesn't work, I don't know. You can try reinstalling entirely. To save your settings, you need to do a few tricks, since you don't have a /home partition. At partitioning, select manual partitioning. Then, select the partition that you want to install, set it as / and make sure that you DON'T reformat. Then proceed. It should warn you how ubuntu is already installed, and various folders will be deleted. That is good. Lastly, when you setup your user, use the same name as your current user.

I gave up. I created an image of WINDOWS and used Norton Ghost to create WINDOWS in a different hard drive with adequate space for KUBUNTU. I then installed KUBUNTU from a CD (other than UBUNTU) and am now finishing this problem as solved.

Thanks Tom:

Now I can't get Thunderbird to work so I don't have any email yet (again). I
downloaded the file but it did not install.

Hi :)

Try installing things straight from
Applications - Add/Remove Applications
(i think thunderbird is easiest this route?) or else Synaptic usually gives the same but in a lot more detail and with extra finesse
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Tom:

When I was using UBUNTU I found and used "Add/Remove Applications" !!!
Now in KUBUNTU I simply can not find this item: There is a Home folder on the desk top. In Applications (sub-folder in the lower left icon which contains FAVORITES, APPLICATIONS, COMPUTER PLACES, ETC, I click on APPLICATIONS and get Utilities, Systems, Settings, Office, Multimedia, Internet, and Graphics
In Systems I can get the file manager DOLPHIN (which is also available in FAVORITES and which is the same as Home folder that I mentioned first. I also can not find the "K Menu" that is supposed to contain Add/Remove.

As I said I found it simply in UBUNTU, but I can't in KUBUNTU.

Tom:

I found it:
Application Kickoff > System Settings > Add and Remove Software > Internet > thunderbird-2.0.0.23+build1+nobinonly-Oubintu0.9.04.1

Now I still can not get to the incoming server. This time I know that I have the right password, the right user name (same as e-mail address) .

So now I have to say that this problem is solved but I still can not get the email. I'll try again tomorrow .

Today it worked and I made no changes since yesterday. I am replying to
this automated echo of your reply at 1:33 a.m. (Denver time) using
KUBUNTU THUNDERBIRD.

Lol, sometimes problems do seem to magically fix themselves somehow in linux. Usually it can be explained away by some updates and a few reboots that restart key functions. Sometimes the problem is already being worked on by developers - sometimes a bug-report alerts them to the problem.

Anyway it's great to hear you have managed to fix this somehow :)
Congrats and regards from
Tom :)
