Outgoing Mail Server Refused SMTP connection

Asked by John Rosing

Binary package hint: yelp

I am using UBUNTU 9.4. Today I am able to receive e-mails using THUNDERBIRD 2.0.0.23 (2009817). Yesterday I was able to receive and send one email. My server settings are incoming: pop3.live.com; outgoing: smtp.live.com. The error message "smtp.live.com failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing smtp connections." Yesterday's mail sending succeeded.

Contacting the server at QWEST resulted their tech support being unable to assist with UBUNTU. They suggested that I contact LINUX support at 1-800-718-7318 which resulted in my leaving a message to receive a call back.

My WINDOWS mail is still working. Their trouble escalation involves MICROSOFT support. They have no UBUNTU support.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

Sounds like you are using Qwest Live, which I use in Evolution. I set up with similar options, with secure connections set up (I have SSL encryption under Receiving Email tab, but have TLS encryption under Sending Email for some reason). Authentication is set to Type: Login, but I also used Check for Supported Types buttons. Also, under receiving, I have Authentication Type->Password.
You might also want to search for Windows Live setup info and see if there is anything. I initially had a problem because I didn't have encryption enabled, but found in links that show how to set up for pop3 that I needed it. One such link is at
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/send-and-receive-your-hotmail-messages-through-evolution.html but I am sure you can find better if needed.

At one time my connection was successful. I have the correct incoming server as pop3.live.com port 995 and >>>> I am receiving mail <<<< . I have the correct outgoing server as smtp.live.com port 25 and I succeeded in sending one message on 9/3/09. Then starting the next day I get the following error message:

........... The message could not be sent because connection to SMTP server smtp.live.com failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server setting is correct and try again, or else contact your network administrator.

When I go to Thunderbird > Edit > Account Settings > Outgoing Server > Edit >> Server: smtp.live.com port 25; Use name and password checked; User name correct; TLS, if available is checked.

However I cannot enter my password here. If the password is different than for the incoming server then I don't know how to change it. IT SHOULD NOT BE. If for any reason this password was changed at the server and it does not match the incoming server I don't know how to verify this. The incoming service is OK.

When I contact the network administrator, QWEST, I am informed that they do not support LINUX or OBUNTU. There my email service works both incoming and outgoing. HOWEVER, since I did not remember my password in WINDOWS and I needed it to set up THUNDERBIRD, I changed the password in WINDOWS to be the same as in OBUNTU.

Perhaps I should uninstall THUNDERBIRD and subsequently re-install it?? It does not matter if I loose any history of messages in such a process.

How do I start all over again? I may have a password issue. Can I un-install THUNDERBIRD and subsequently install (re-install) THUNDERBIRD? OR can I re-install THUNDERBIRD on top of the existing installation ? I don't care if I loose any previously saved information.

I FOUND THE ANSWER AND AM NOW ABLE TO SEND OUT MESSAGES:

THUNDERBIRD/ Inbox/ Edit/ Preferences/ Privacy/ Edit Saved Passwords/
Then highlight the site in question (....smtp.live.com)
Remove
Close
Then send message and a password is requested; when it is filled out the message was sent out

Now I am in a new system and trying to learn how to use it. I converted
my UBUNTU OS to a KUBUNTU OS by downloading and installing KDE. Although
there are now new steps that I must learn, frustrations to overcome,
etc, This is much more user friendly than UBUNTU. It is quite similar to
WINDOWS OS. It did require the download of about 750 MiB on my hard drive.

I am writing this note to you from within THUNDERBIRD in KUBUNTU where
all mail history is preserved. Am merely sending a RESPONSE to your
latest comment in question #82128.

Regards
John
