BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02) cannot detect wireless networks after system update on Compaq nx6110 notebook in Kubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope with the KDE 3.5.10 Remix - wlan0 No scan results

Asked by Wolfgang Ludwig

Hello!

I am using Kubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope with the KDE 3.5.10 Remix. I was using Hardy Heron previously, and the wireless was working. Since the system update, I can't find any more wireless networks. The blue light on the wireless button on my Compaq nx6110 notebook however indicates that the wireless hardware is working.
I first thought it is a problem related to NetworkManager. Now I deleted that programme and installed wicd. Ethernet works fine, but wicd shows no wireless networks in the environment even though it should. The same goes for this:

wolfgang@nb-wolfgang:~$ iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 No scan results

Some more system output to give you an idea of my system:
wolfgang@nb-wolfgang:~$ lspci -v

I also tried to do something about the driver. I followed the tutorial on http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43 and did the following:

wget http://bu3sch.de/b43/fwcutter/b43-fwcutter-012.tar.bz2
tar xjf b43-fwcutter-012.tar.bz2
cd b43-fwcutter-012
make
cd ..
export FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR="/lib/firmware"
wget http://mirror2.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2
tar xjf broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2
cd broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5/driver
sudo ../../b43-fwcutter-012/b43-fwcutter -w "$FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR" wl_apsta_mimo.o

and then I rebooted. To no avail.

Does anyone have a clue how to fix the problem?

actionparsnip: I cannot see how the things described in that article are different from what I did?

Mark:
I followed the procedure in the first article, the output was this:

wolfgang@nb-wolfgang:~$ sudo rmmod ssb
[sudo] password for wolfgang:
ERROR: Removing 'ssb': Function not implemented
wolfgang@nb-wolfgang:~$ sudo modprobe wl
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/dazuko, it will be ignored in a future release.
FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.30/modules.dep: No such file or directory

So it didn't work.

Then the second article: I also tried to hook my self up to the router via an ethernet cable. The internet still works than as before with the ethernet cable, but I also still cannot access the router website through any of the IP suggested in the website listed in the article. Anyway, this might have to do with the fact that we have a static network here, and I don't think the router is the problem, anyway (others can successfully connect).

Also, the problem in that article was maybe the error message [ 18.980040] b43-phy0: Radio hardware status changed to DISABLED. I don't see the error message in my output:
wolfgang@nb-wolfgang:~$ dmesg | grep b43
b43-pci-bridge 0000:02:04.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 21 (level, low) -> IRQ 21
b43-phy0: Broadcom 4318 WLAN found (core revision 9)

Then, John Kelly reports that he fixed his problem by enabling encryption in the advanced box. Which advanced box? I guess he is talking about wicd. It seems that his problem is different from my problem: He was able to see the network, but not connect. I don't even see any wireless networks, and therefore I also cannot get to an advanced box that allows me to setup the encryption.

Some more observations from my system:
When I look at all the processes running, I don't see a process named wpa_supplicant running. Should that trouble me?

Is there anything unusual about this?

Hi,

First make sure to disable encryption and enable SSID broadcasting on the wireless router. Make sure the SSID is not hidden. Also make sure that wicd is not trying to use encryption as well.

You can also try booting an older kernel version using the grub boot menu. You can enter the grub menu by pressing the ESC(ape) key a few seconds after rebooting your pc. There might be a bug/regression in the kernel version you are currently using.

After booting into the older kernel version, try scanning for networks again using this command:

sudo iwlist scan

If that does not help either, I suggest booting from the following LiveCD's to see which one works fine with your wireless chipset: Ubuntu 9.04 LiveCD, Mandriva Linux One 2009 Spring LiveCD and openSUSE 11.1 32-bit LiveCD.

The problem you are experiencing might be strictly limited to Kubuntu v9.04 and might not occur on other distributions.

Regards,

Mark

Thanks for your help; I tried to run an older kernel, but that didn't help.

Then I gave my laptop to my brother to fix it and he made it. I think what he found out was that the wireless was turned off, but the button didn't work. It showed the light even though the wireless was turned off. He fixed it by through going through the kernel configuration, I think.
The button still doesn't work 100%, because it even shows light when the wireless is turned off. However, the functionality of the button is back.

maar toch bedankt voor je ondersteuning ;)

I just spent a couple hours working the same wireless problem mentioned above after installing (from scratch) 9.04; the wireless network connection would not work (I've had this same problem in fedora 10 & 11 also, but never figured it out until this thread). Because I did solve my installation problem easily (once understood), I wish to share the solution with you and see if it helps.

This article started me on the path that lead to my wlan0 problem. I followed all the system query commands, added a few of my own (issued the command "ifconfig wlan0 up" and nothing changed, then looked at the output of dmesg (dmesg | grep b43) and determined that the I could not get wlan0 up because the files to support my BCM4318 could not be found.

Solution: follow the error message instructions from dmesg, i.e., go to URL http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#b43_and_b43legacy, read the whole document, then follow instructions in section "firmware installation", item 3, "in latest versions of Ubuntu (all flavors) and Debian". I encountered one problem following the instructions... "apt_get" did not get installed with 9.04, so I used "aptitude install app-get", then used "app-get install b43-fwcutter" and replied "yes" when prompted. After a reboot, I successfully configured my hidden wireless network and connected. Just for fun I checked the output from dmesg again, and this time all firmware requested for b43 was found.

This stuff is so much fun - I should of never quit being an SA!!

Hope this helps someone.

Steve

after hours and hours of trying to install a new broadcom airforce 4318 wlan card. I did just about what every article out there said to do I still had no luck connecting to a wifi network. The computer saw the wlan card as being installed, but still no connection. Finally I realized after physically installing the mini pci wlan I had to enable the wlan card in bios setup. I hope this helps someone. It may be a no brainer to some, but not all.
