Hi John,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless configuration in Ubuntu 9.04, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below to the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)

cat /etc/lsb-release
sudo iwlist scanning
sudo lshw -C network
lspci -nn
lsusb
uname -a
dmesg | grep ound
dmesg | grep witch
iwconfig

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread

Keep in mind that one or more of the following 5 basic components need to be configured correctly so that wireless can work correctly in Linux:

Wireless configuration in the BIOS, hardware wireless switch setting, active wireless driver version, the firmware for the wireless chipset (stored as a file in Linux), and the configuration of the wireless parameters in wicd or NetworkManager (SSID broadcast settings, encryption settings, name of wireless interface stored in wicd, the chosen channel for wireless transmission, ...) .

Regards,

Mark

Hi John,

If you are unable to see (and connect to) your wireless router by choosing "edit connections" in the networkmanager icon in the top right corner of your Ubuntu desktop, then I suggest this alternative:

First connect your network card to the wireless router using a LAN cable.

Then please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below to the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install wicd

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread

Step 4: Enable SSID broadcasting on the router and temporarily disable all security (deactivate WEP and WPA(2) encryption) on the wireless router

Step 5: Make sure to call the wireless interface

wlan0

inside the wicd configuration panel.

You can read more about wicd here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicd_(Linux_Network_Manager)

Step 6: Try to connect to your wireless network using wicd.

Regards,

Mark

Hi John,

One more thing:

If wireless still does not work when using wicd, please send us the following info:

1. The EXACT model of HP Pavilion you are using. Is it an HP Pavilion dv9005us, an HP Pavilion dv8000 or something else?

2. The output of the following command:

dmesg | grep b43

Regards,

Mark

Hi John,

You need to connect your laptop to the router using an ethernet cable to be able to reconfigure the router.

Here is an explanation on how to access the router:

http://compnetworking.about.com/od/wifihomenetworking/ht/access-routers.htm

You can use Firefox as the browser used to access the router.

In the router configuration panels, make sure to enable SSID broadcasting and to disable encryption. Save the change on the router and reboot the router to be sure the changes were applied and saved.

Then scan for networks again using wicd

Mark

Hi,

In the following screenshot

http://wicd.sourceforge.net/screenshot.php

you can see that you need to press the refresh button in the top middle part of the main screen of wicd in order to refresh the list of available networks (which is the same thing as scanning for available networks).

If the refresh button does not help, then try pressing the wireless key a few times on your DV5000 keyboard to try to disable and then re-enable wireless.

If that does not work either, I cannot help you any further.

Regards,

Mark

Hi,

See here for more info on the meaning of (E)SSID:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essid

So SSID is the name of your wireless access point, which is the default name of the wireless router (for example: linksys) or the name you gave the router. My own router has a unique SSID because I gave my router a different name.

Mark

Hello Mark,
are you still there after me pestering you so much.

It appears that my ssid is my network name and there is a certain channel specified for wireless.
I scanned.. it went over and back but didnt connect.
In one of the drop down menus in wicd manager I saw ndswrapper does that have any bearing because you mentioned it in previous posts?
I did the refresh and the icons appeared but as I said they couldnt connect.
In the box hidden network I put in network name and pressed @add@
In the box... create adhoc network.... I put in my network name and my laptop ip address found in bottom of router info designated dhcp client names ..... and the channel no. specified in wireless section!? Am I doing something wrong?
Look forward to your patient help!!
thanks

Hi John,

After some further investigation on the output you sent me, I think your wireless is still switched off via a hardware switch on your pc or is misconfigured in the BIOS of your laptop.

Take another look at this output you sent me previously:

john@abraham-laptop:~$ dmesg | grep b43
[ 2.681328] b43-pci-bridge 0000:06:02.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 21 (level, low) -> IRQ 21
[ 11.326392] b43-phy0: Broadcom 4318 WLAN found
[ 17.962171] input: b43-phy0 as /devices/virtual/input/input9
[ 18.056078] b43 ssb0:0: firmware: requesting b43/ucode5.fw
[ 18.147297] b43 ssb0:0: firmware: requesting b43/pcm5.fw
[ 18.153029] b43 ssb0:0: firmware: requesting b43/b0g0initvals5.fw
[ 18.192458] b43 ssb0:0: firmware: requesting b43/b0g0bsinitvals5.fw
[ 18.312049] b43-phy0: Loading firmware version 410.2160 (2007-05-26 15:32:10)
[ 18.361292] Registered led device: b43-phy0::radio
[ 18.396744] b43-phy0: Radio turned on by software
[ 18.980040] b43-phy0: Radio hardware status changed to DISABLED
[ 19.044085] b43-phy0: Radio turned on by software
[ 19.044090] b43-phy0: The hardware RF-kill button still turns the radio physically off. Press the button to turn it on.

As you can see, the status was "b43-phy0: Radio hardware status changed to DISABLED"

Now you need to get that radio (=wireless) hardware status from DISABLED to ENABLED.

If you have such a hardware switch, try playing with it and then recheck output of command

dmesg | grep b43

until you get the output

"b43-phy0: Radio hardware status changed to ENABLED"

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Mark

Hello Mark,
thank you very much for successfully helping me to enable wireless!!!!
I tried everything but what worked was when I enabled encryption in the
Advanced box with WEP shared/restricted and now it works perfectly.I did
find wep encryption afterwards in the router but thankfully I didnt
after all have to disable it.

I thank you again for your help and your patience!!
What I would *really* like to ask you is what I would really like to
*know* is what do I have in having WICD apart from an alternative to
Broadcom??
thanks
John

Hi John,

Great to hear that your wireless issue is solved now. Can you please set this thread to status "solved", if the issue is solved?

Broadcom stands for a brand of wireless cards that are a real pain to configure ;-) So it is a brand, not a software program like wicd. wicd is an alternative to NetworkManager in Ubuntu. So wicd network manager is an alternative Linux program for managing wireless connections. I noticed - for other people but also on my own pc - that wicd works much better than NetworkManager in Kubuntu 9.04. NetworkManager is totally broken in Kubuntu 9.04, which is a shame... But this is not such a problem in Ubuntu.

Only drawback in wicd is that it does not support 3G (mobile broadband) connections yet.

If you need 3G functionality, you will need to switch back to NetworkManager.

Regards,

Mark

Hi John,

You cannot use wicd and network-manager at the same time. To regain 3G functionality, you need to reinstall network-manager.

To do that, connect your pc to the router using a LAN cable.

Then open a terminal and enter the following commands:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install network-manager network-manager-gnome

This installation will automatically remove wicd and then install network-manager-gnome and network-manager

network-manager-gnome will allow you to use wired, wireless and 3G

Regards,

Mark

Hello Mark, reverting to network manager gnome again to see can I now get wired wireless and 3G I notice in the output below that radio switch is turned on by software!!?

john@abraham-laptop:~$ dmesg | grep b43
[ 2.685423] b43-pci-bridge 0000:06:02.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 21 (level, low) -> IRQ 21
[ 11.227204] b43-phy0: Broadcom 4318 WLAN found
[ 21.844277] input: b43-phy0 as /devices/virtual/input/input9
[ 21.936054] b43 ssb0:0: firmware: requesting b43/ucode5.fw
[ 22.004172] b43 ssb0:0: firmware: requesting b43/pcm5.fw
[ 22.016287] b43 ssb0:0: firmware: requesting b43/b0g0initvals5.fw

[ 22.388446] Registered led device: b43-phy0::radio
[ 22.412130] b43-phy0: Radio turned on by software

We now have the hardware switch turned on!!!..if I am not mistaken by the output

but I still cant access wireless at home which is altogether not fundamentaly important because of your helping me with WICD

when I tried to set the settings in network manager for my hidden network.. it scanned with the green dots but did not connect and after a while the box appeared showing as I if I had tried to access wep40/bit passphrase where as in reality I had entered in wep128bit passphrase with the key box showing black dots going all the way across the bar whereas my key entry would only be 10 dots for the required encryption key We now have the hardware switch turned on!!! I also could only revert to wired by disconnected the cable and putting it back in again!? Is it possible make progress in accessing wireless through network manager otherwise I will be happy to stick with WICD

thanking you very much
John

Hi John,

I recommend abandoning the idea of using NetworkManager. Stick with what works. So reinstall wicd with this procedure (I already gave it previously):

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below to the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install wicd

Mark
