Wireless refuses to work

Asked by Max Palumbo

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 from the AMD64 image on the Ubuntu website. I proceeded to make a bootable USB stick, booted, etc. I installed Ubuntu onto a Lenovo V570 notebook. My problem consists of the wireless not showing up and refusing to work, which is odd because it worked decently in Windows 7. I tried googling, and got the suggestion to use a few commands. Below are the commands: sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep...(the big long one), lspci, and lsusb, and their outputs. It's running an Intel i5 processor, with Sandy Bridge drivers.

Command:
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|ireless|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt5|rt6|rt7|usb|witch|wl';sudo dmidecode|egrep 'Manufact|Product'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|wmi|witch|wl'; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; ps -aux|egrep 'icd|etwork'; sudo lsmod

Returned:
max@max-Lenovo-V570:~$ sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|ireless|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt5|rt6|rt7|usb|witch|wl';sudo dmidecode|egrep 'Manufact|Product'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|wmi|witch|wl'; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; ps -aux|egrep 'icd|etwork'; sudo lsmod

Ok the device is:
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Device [8086:0886] (rev 67)

Try:

sudo modprobe iwlagn

Then run:

sudo iwlist scan

Do you see wireless networks?

Not a thing. The commands return:

max@max-Lenovo-V570:~$ sudo modprobe iwlagn
[sudo] password for max:
max@max-Lenovo-V570:~$ sudo iwlist scan
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

At the moment, I've hooked up network sharing using a LAN cable and another ubuntu netbook. Is it possible that has something to do with it?

A user called Wilson Britten (wilsunb) at the following link

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/169971

got his wireless issue on his Lenovo V570 solved by flashing the newest BIOS for the Lenovo V570 onto his PC and then installing Ubuntu 11.04

I suggest following his procedure....

Wilson was using the same wireless adapter as you are using : Wireless Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N + WiMAX 6150 [8086:0886] (rev 67)

Can you help with this problem?
