Please send us the full Terminal output of ALL the commands from step 5 in this procedure:
https:/
You only sent the output of the last command in the list, which is not enough...

Also try rebooting then retrying. What is the output of:
lsb_release -a; uname -a
Thanks

After I went through all the commands from step 5 I got the strong
impression that the trouble was over:
- ubuntu software centre behaved normally (before, it shut down
immediately),
- update service worked again (before, it shut down just after downloading),
- synaptic worked again
If I repeat this action, won't I risk something? It seems to me that the
whole ubuntu package was reinstalled.
If you think it is still necessary I will do it of course.

Are "LSB modules" important?
Thank you

Then why do you have Raring all over your update configuration?
Did you by any chance upgrade directly from Raring to Trusty?

Re-doing the Package management troubleshooting procedure should not do any harm, but will most probably not be necessary.
I see one weakness in your sources.list configuration file.
Lines 44 and 45 still show raring instead of trusty.
I recommend that you execute the following steps:
Open a terminal window and issue the command
sudo gedit /etc/apt/
This should ask for your password as confirmation for an administrative action and will the open an editor with the sources.list file loaded.
Scroll down to lines 44 and 45 and replace "raring" by "trusty" (two occurrences).
Save the file and close the editor.
Then issue the commands
uname -a
lsb_release -crid
sudo dpkg --audit
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
and copy/paste all output into this question document.

In this pc I upgraded as soon as an upgrade was offered; so from 10 to
11 to 12 to 13 to 14.04.
So if raring preceeds trusty then yes.
Otherwise I wouldn't know!

There are always to releases per year and both numbers in the release numbering are important.
The correct sequence is to upgrade 13.04 -> 13-10 -> 14-04
A direct upgrade 13.04 -> 14.04 was and is not supported.
In any case the output of the commands that I requested should provide the information whether your package management system is sane.

Sorry to hear that you ran into problems with your system. I doubt that they are related to the update problems that were the starting pint of this question (I assume they finally were solved with your last message on April 4).
If you try booting into Ubuntu, what happens? Any error messages or just a black screen? Does Ctrl-Alt-F1 open a virtual console in terminal mode?
What happens if you try the recovery mode options from the grub screen?

For the error messages with my commands:
Have you selected "root command prompt" or have you logged in with your own username?
"lot of screens with errors":
This might be the root cause: Such messages usually indicate a hardware problem with the hard disk or hard disk controller. It might be that your disk drive is failing. Eventually it is just a loose cable connection between controller and hard disk, so you might check whether the cable is correctly fit into the sockets.
You wrote that you already have created a backup of your home directory (and hopefully the directories below), so your files should be safe, unless you have certain files in other directories that you missed to backup.
If the culprit is failing hardware, then there is not much what we can recommend to do.

It is not advised to start the graphical environment from inside a root command prompt (and it is not "start ubuntu" anyhow).
You should use this root command prompt only temporarily for repair activities.
Can you re-issue the commands
mount -o rw,remount /
update-grub
and tell what the result is?
To continue from the root command prompt status you have to leave that environment (with "exit"). This should bring you back into the grub recovery menu, where you find an entry "resume", which should load the normal Ubuntu environment.

As Windows starts up without problems from the grub screen I think the disk is OK. So it is only something in Ubuntu which resist starting up.
As I have made a backup from /home/bram + subdirectories can't I reinstall Ubuntu "from scratch" using the rescue dvd?
Do I have to remove the existing Ubuntu installation first? Or will it overwrite it?

Before you start overwriting your current system, I want to recommend to try some more repair activities.
1. Can you try to select in grub the advanced option for Ubuntu and then select an older kernel (one with a lower number), does this also lead to a blank screen?
2. If you try booting into Ubuntu and get a blank screen only, press ctrl-alt-f1 for logging in in command line mode and issue the commands
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Are there any significant error messages (like "no space left on disk" etc.)?
And yes, booting from an installation DVD or USB-stick should allow an in-place overwriting of the old installation with a new one. You have to take care during the partitioning step of the installation to select the right option. I am not sure whether you will be offered something like "replace the current Ubuntu installation"; maybe you have to select "something else" to get a selection screen where you can then indicate that you want to reuse the existing partitions.

1. I tried that with several older versions. There is a lot of downloading, however no working ubuntu.
2. apt-get update: returns a lot of downloading with almost every time warnings: for instance:
could not find 'ppa.launchpad.net'
or: some index files could not be downloaded. These are neglected or older version are used.
or: cannot write to /var/cache/apt/
apt-get dist-upgrade: W: no locking is used for write-only-
E: cannot write to /var/cache/apt
E: the package lists or statusfile could not be parsed or opened.
and then it returns to the cursor
after exit and resume I get a black screen with a cursor
Still, with the grub screen I can still start windows. Therefore I think the disk is not the problem

1. When you select to boot into an older kernel (by selecting an older kernel from the grub screen), there should not be any downloading, it should just boot and select an older version of the kernel instead of the newest one. Can you please elaborate what kind of "downloading" you see there.

1. well, I see a lot of screens racing over the screen; maybe it is just reading from the disk.

Ok, what you see might be the system messages from the boot process that are hidden behind the Ubuntu logo in a normal boot process.
I do not understand why you would then get "... could not find 'ppa.launchpad.net' ..." messages.
Just to get a clear picture on the status of your Ubuntu system, please sum up:
1. When booting Ubuntu in the normal way, you get a black screen with a blinking cursor and nothing else - is that the case?
2. Can you switch to a virtual console (cltr-alt-F1) in such case?
3. When you select an older kernel from grub, you get the same (black screen)?
4. Can you boot into advanced - root command prompt?

1. Yes, but after say 20 sec messages race over the screen:
[ xxx.yyyyyy] usb 1-6.1: clear tt 1 (9052) error -71
where xxx goes from 001 to 999 (I think) and yyyyyy likewise
2. when I do ctrl-alt-F1 it resumes the same messages
to stop this I do ctrl-alt-del and get say the ubuntu goodbye screen followed by the BIOS screen and then the grub screen.
3. in this case I get a black screen with the blinking cursor and nothing else.
Doing ctrl-alt-F1 in this case I get:
Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS bram-mycom tty1
login: initctl: event failed
+ blinking cursor
although I chose an older version.
4. After ctrl-alt-del (or just the power switch) I choose advanced option and get the repair menu. There I can chose: root and get in the terminal (root@bram-mycom:~# cursor)

Just as information: the numbers in square brackets [xxx.yyyyyy] indicate the time (seconds and fractions) since booting.
If most of the message are related to the same hardware (e.g. usb xxx or ata nnn), then they might indicate a problem with that device - either a hardware problem or a problem with the driver for it.
If you re-try booting into an older kernel and use ctrl-alt-F1 to switch to a virtual console (where you got the "initctl: event failed" message), can you log in in that mode (do you get another "login:" prompt if you press enter where you then can enter your username, and a "password:" prompt for your password)?

You are right!
I get:
Last login: wed april 8 09:23:11 on tty1
welcome to ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS ....
* documentation https:/
7 packages can be updated
7 uodates are security updates.
and then the prompt again

Ok, in such mode you can try updating the packages (if the network is correctly functioning).
issue the commands
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
and check whether you get any significant error messages. (I know, it is hard to judge what a significant error message might be.)
You should also verify with
df -h
and
df -i
if one of the partitions (those with real device names /dev/sdxx not those where you see tmpfs or proc in the first column) is running out of space (look for the % value).

In Windows I made a screenshot of a "gparted' equivalent.
In my eyes nothing strange.

The head of the repair menu (with resume, clean, dpkg, ...) says also:
(staus of filesystem: read only)

If you get the "status of filesystem: read only", can you remount it in writeable mode with the command
mount -o rw,remount /
(If logged in as normal user, then of course with sudo mount ...)

I have done that and am still in the terminal.
Is there a command in the terminal to start Ubuntu?

Or, a command to get the grub menu without switching off the computer.

Re-mounting the file system read-write should not change anything, but just provide the basis of further repair activities (in has an effect only for the current session and gets lost after a reboot). You still should be in the terminal after that command, but then the sudo apt-get ... commands might work.
To start the graphical environment when you have booted into command line mode you can use the "startx" command. But this makes sense only if all other problems (e.g. disk is readonly) have been solved.

You can use the command
sudo reboot
or
sudo shutdown
sudo poweroff
etc.
to restart / shutdown the computer from a terminal without hard switching off with the power button-

In root-terminal I get after "startx" screens that are quite different from previous ones.
It ends with:
Loading extension GLX
xinit: connection to X server lost
waiting for X server to shut down error setting MTTR (base = 0xd7000000, size = 0x00e00000, type = 1) Invalid argument (22)
(EE) Server terminated succesfully (0). Closing log file.
and then the cursor

It does not surprise me that the "startx" command does not provide a working graphical environment. My assumption is that the other problems have to be solved first, and then standard booting of Ubuntu should provide a working GUI anyhow.
Can you reboot into the terminal environment, issue the remount command and then try apt-get? What is the outcome?

apt-get update did not work properly: a lot of things could not be found; f.i.:
getting http://
and f.i:
getting https:/
apt-get dist-upgrade everything: ready
0 packages updated, 0 packets reinstalled, 0 removed and 0 not updated.
I tried 'firefox' and 'thunderbird' as commands to see if the terminal is connected to internet.
In both cases: XPCOMGlueload error for file /usr/lib/

It seems that he network connection was not running.
You cannot use graphical programs like firefox or thunderbird in the command line mode.
Testing the network connection can be done with command line programs.
e.g.
ping -c 3 8.8.8.8
ifconfig

ping: Network is unreachable
ifconfig:
lo link encap:Local loopback
inet addr: 127.0.0.1 Mask 255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 scope: host
and 5 more lines.
Again, starting Windows from the grub menu showed access to internet...
So, I think that up to grub all is well, but afterwards starting ubuntu from grub gives trouble.
Shouldn't I reinstall ubuntu after formatting the ext4 partition where ubuntu is sitting now?
The 14.04 dvd has also gparted.
I really feel guilty using so much of your time!

it seems that the point has come where a new installation promises a better and quicker solution than spending more effort in futile repair activities.
Booting from an Ubuntu 14.04 installation DVD should enable you to re-use and/or format the partitions.

After all this I reinstalled from a dvd. With gparted I formatted the Ubuntu partitions to ext4 and this small "shuttle" partition and installed 14.04 in those partitions.
For a time this worked well.
Then I remarked the last 2 weeks that no updates were offered.
If I started updates from the dash it returned: waiting till other software managers are closed.
Since I have tried a lot of suggestions from similar questions and now again Ubuntu will not start.
In one of the seesions Launchpad started spontaniously and made a bug report!
I have the feeling I have to reinstall Ubuntu again from the dvd but how do I prevent getting the same problems ?
I am typing this using Widows started from the grub menu to show that grub and connection to internet are OK.
