Gimp will not install

Asked by S Blok

I am running Ubuntu 9.10

Some how GIMP was deleted off my computer and when I tried to re-install it I get the following error: The following packages have unresolved dependencies. Make sure all required repositories are and enabled in the preferences.
gimp:
Depends: libgimp2.0 (>=2.6.10) but 2.6.7-1ubuntu1.1 is to be installed
Depends: libatk1.0-0 (>=1.29.3) but 1.28.0-0ubuntu1 is to be installed
Depends: libc6 (>=2.11) but 2.10.1-0ubuntu17 is to be installed
Depends: libfontconfig1 (>=2.8.0) but 2.6.0-1ubuntu12 is to be installed
Depends: libglib2.0-0 (>=2.23.5) but 2.22.3-0ubuntu1 is to be installed
Depends: libgtk2.0-0 (>=2.20.0) but 2.18.3-1ubuntu2.2 is to be installed

I looked in Synaptic Package Manager for libgimp2.0 and found that the installed version was 2.6.7-1ubuntu1.1 but when I tried to upgrade it, it also came back with similar errors.

How do I get GIMP installed?

I also can't install avidemux for similar reasons.

I can only install. The reinstall option is not available.

Please select install and try. It would be best to completely remove gimp and then start from scratch. But do try installing first..

1 - Please go to this site: http://www.getdeb.net/software/GIMP
2- Click where it says 'install this now'

You will see a pop-up window that says Launch Application and apturl should be selected and highlighted already there for you. Click ok and enter your password when prompted.

Hopefully this will work else we may have no other choice than build from scratch, not a major issue and you will learn a lot too :-) let's try the above and see first...

When I got to the part to install GIMP I got this message:

"Can not install 'gimp' (E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.)

I have never build anything from scratch, so I will probably need a lot of assistance.

Ok let's try one last time before we build from scratch, please uninstall gimp 'completely' first.

1 - System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager
2 - Search for gimp
3 - 'right' click and select mark for complete removal - and apply.

Restart your system. Then do exactly the same thing as before only this time please select 'mark for installation'. And apply. If it still throws up dependency errors we will build from scratch..

Unfortunately, I still get the following errors:
gimp:
Depends: libgimp2.0 (>=2.6.10) but 2.6.7-1ubuntu1.1 is to be installed
Depends: libatk1.0-0 (>=1.29.3) but 1.28.0-0ubuntu1 is to be installed

installed
Depends: libglib2.0-0 (>=2.23.5) but 2.22.3-0ubuntu1 is to be
installed
Depends: libgtk2.0-0 (>=2.20.0) but 2.18.3-1ubuntu2.2 is to be
installed

Gimpis completely uninstalled.

I went to the terminal and entered sudo sh -c “echo ‘deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/matthaeus123/mrw-gimp-svn/ubuntu lucid main’
>> /etc/apt/sources.list”

It did not ask me for my password, it immediately came back with this
message:
bash: /etc/apt/sources.list”: Permission denied

Did I miss doing anything?

ok no prob,
Please type in : sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list this will open up the file for you in gedit.
At the very bottom add:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/matthaeus123/mrw-gimp-svn/ubuntu lucid main

Save the file then retry..

You strictly need to open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Can you help with this problem?
