Sounds like a bug at first glance.
Does the whole theme change when you open e.g. gedit, Synaptic, OpenOffice?
Do icons change also in other menus e.g. System preferences and - administration?

Which theme is in use, an official one or one downloaded from the internet?
Is it customized or default style?
What happens when you change it?
System preferences -> appearance

Is 10.10 new installation or updated?
Did you update the system right away after installation?
Via CLI:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get -f install

Try to update icon cache, via CLI:
sudo updatedb
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache

Hi! Samantha
The problem concern only "Netbook" version, in "Desktop" and "Netbook
2D" all is OK.
1) No changes.
2) No, only in Application and Files menu.
3) Official theme.
4) Yes, i have sett small characters, but the problem is the same with
standard size, i must do so because in standard characters size the
applications names are too much cut.
5) The same situation.
6) 10.10 netbook update from 10.4 netbook.

If i apply:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get -f install

or

sudo updatedb
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache

the problem is solved but at next system start the problem is always the same.
This is no good solution.

I think that we are in presence of a system starting bug.
Thanks.

Which graphic card and driver?
The issue wasn't with 10.04?

This is tricky unless we get a meaningful error message.
Please have a look in .xsession-errors (hidden file in /home/user) if it states any errors regarding the issue.
Please also verify if gnome-settings-daemon is running on startup or crashing during session.
Leave .xsession-errors open to watch changes in the file while playing with the menu and run 'top' in a terminal to watch processes.

e.g. to see if g-s-d is running:
ps aux | grep settings

GUI: system administration -> system monitor -> processes

Hi Samantha !

I have discovered a sample empiric trick to solve the problem:

1) start Ubuntu in NETBOOK version;
2) click "Applications" (the icons are dummy);
3) click file manager;
4) click applications (hops! all icons are OK);
5) click in "Application" "File Folder" (the icons are dummy);
6) click file manager;
7) click in "Application" "File Folder" (hops! all icons are OK).
8) now the problem is solved too the next system start.

Nvidia GeForce 9300m GS 256 MB grafic card.
"nVidia Ubuntu current version (suggested)" (so declared in "Added
driver" application).

The problem is only in UBUNTU 10.10 NETBOOK VERSION.
ALLIS OK: in UBUNTU 10.10 DESKTOOP vesrsion, in UBUNTU 10.10 NETBOOK 2D
vesrsion and in UBUNTU 10.04 NETBOOK vesrsion !!

The same driver work correctly in all other 3 system versions, for this
i think that is not a driver problem but only a UBUNTU 10.10 DESKTOOP
starting bug.

Best regards.

Anything in .xsession-errors?

> 2) click "Applications" (the icons are dummy)

Instead of file manager, click on system preferences -> appearance
Click again applications.
Result?

Hi Samantha!
Nothing in .xsession-errors.
Result of your suggest procedure is OK, in the same way of my previous
trick,
but at the new system restart the problem is always present.
I underline that the problem is only at the start of UBUNTU 10.10
Netbook version and only with UBUNTU 10.10 Netbook version, in all other
Ubuntu 10.10 and 10.04 versions all is OK.

I repeat: i think that we are in front of a starting bug only for the 10.10 Netbook version.

I think that your suggested procedure or my empiric trick may be a solution for the actual moment but the definitive solution must be the correction of the bug.

Best regards.

This is why you need to find out which package is responsible.
Since 2D is ok it's maybe compiz.

Next step to exclude configuration issues is to create a second 'test-user' and reproduce the steps.

Did you check if gnome-settings-daemon is started after login?

Thank you. It's obviously running.
If you don't mind, after doing this
> 2) click "Applications" (the icons are dummy);

would you please post content of .xsession-errors
and also content of
/var/log/dmesg

As you like, you may also paste it there
http://paste.ubuntu.com/
and post the links here.

In this moment (when i am writing this response) all icons of
"Applications" and "File and folder" menus are perfectly displayed but
at the moment of system login they was dummy.
That happen "mysteriously" after a lot off time of my work after login.
I show to you a syntetic sequence that i have do:

1) System login (the icon are dummy)
2) Activate mozilla
3) Read your mail and click to response
4) Find and include requested files to the response-mail
5) Hops!!! (now the icons are perfectly visible)

Any way i include to this mail response the requested files dmseg and
.xsection-errors.

Best regards.

otedesco,
it's .xession-errors. Please post it here. It doesn't attach automatically in LP 'answers', you need to copy and paste it here, thanks.

Thanks.
You need to open .xsession-errors right after login.
Then reproduce the steps where the menu shows (dummy) icons or none.
Now the content of .xsession-errors should've changed, you need to reload the file and scroll down to view where it added the last lines in order to get some hints what's going on.

Anyway, from the output above it maybe has something to do with mutter.
Found some comments there, but involves only ATI not Nvidia.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?s=1c5dd4ce93af518fec0763fb5416acf0&t=1624710

Maybe file a bug against mutter after reproducing the steps where the issue occurs, developers will change the package when they think it's related to something else.
After reproducing open a terminal and type:
LANG=C ubuntu-bug mutter

## It should upload .xsession-errors automatically

I have open the your suggested bug procedure.
Yesterday the automatic system updater have done a lot of updates.
After this updates the problem of "dummy icons" in Applications and File
Manager menus is solved but a consequently and new more hard problem is
born: my WiFi-USB mouse Belkin is "crazed", some time work or do not
work double click, some time work or do not work single click, some time
the left button work like right button and vice versa, sometime nothing
happen all that without rules.
The mouse was working perfectly before last updates and it is perfectly
working in Vista system on the same PC.
I haven’t done changes in system mouse setting.
Note that the malfunction is only in the system interface, inside the
application like Thunderbird or Namoroka all work perfectly.
Thanks.

Ok, then please mark this question as solved.

Please open separate questions for each issue. This makes it easier for others to follow or search an issue. Thanks.
