Asked by Fernando

No sound from ATI Radeon 4870X2 2Gb - On Ubuntu 9.04 64 Bits

When I run Vista 64 Bits, I could choose sound from speakers of my HDTV Panasonic TC-P42G10 connected in HDMI cable in the ATI Radeon 4870X2 CrossFire or sound from Motherboard Asus P6T Deluxe (hear-phone stereo or form hometheater 7.1 channels connected on the back of the motherboard). Now, on Ubuntu 64 Bits, it only send sound from stereo hear-phone on the motherboard. I still did not install the original driver from Radeon because it is *.run extension and I clicked twice over the driver and Ubuntu 9.04 64 Bits could not make it install.

Ubuntu 9.04 64 Bits is running over:

CPU Intel Core i7 2.67 Ghz

MotherBoard Asus P6T Deluxe http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=179&l3=815&l4=0&model=2593&modelmenu=2

Ram 12 GB Crossair Dominator 1600Mhz

ATI Cross Fire HD4870X2 2Gb
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.36&lang=English

HDTV Panasonic 42 inches TC-P42G10 connected to ATI 4870X2 through HDMI cable (but on System/Video - Ubuntu tells me it is 32 inches - not great deal so far - but it could recognize it as 600Hz subfield for faster refresh frame rates ). http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/shop/Televisions/All-VIERA-Flat-Panel-HDTVs/model.TC-P42G10.O_11002_7000000000000005702#tabsection

DVD RW Blu-Ray LG - I did not find yet the Ubuntu LightScribe driver.

Hi,

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your sound card, please first follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following 2 commands (copy/paste each command into the Terminal and then hit <enter> after each command)

wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh

bash alsa-info.sh

When the alsa-info.sh script asks "Do you want to run this script? [y/n]", press y and then hit <enter> to make sure the script actually runs. Please send us the full terminal output after the script has actually run.

Step 3: Run the following command. The command STARTS with the word cat and ENDS with the word snd. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below into a Terminal, press enter, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

cat /proc/asound/cards; sudo aptitude install gnome-alsamixer asoundconf-gtk alsa-utils; asoundconf list; aplay -l; ls -lart /dev/snd; cat /dev/sndstat; lspci -nn ; lsmod | grep snd

Step 4: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread

Step 5: Please also report on this thread if you cannot hear sound through the speakers, the headphones or cannot hear sound on both.

Step 6: If you are using a dual boot system (with Windows and Ubuntu installed on separate partitions),
then make sure to set the sound volume in Windows to a high level before booting into Ubuntu.
Also make sure to use the special function keys in Windows to make sure the loudspeakers are physically switched ON and working properly in Windows before installing and testing Ubuntu. This step is necessary with certain Toshiba Tecra laptops.

Step 7: Experiment with the audio settings in gnome-alsamixer and asoundconf-gtk until you get sound (hopefully)

Step 8: In System/Administration/Users and Groups , make sure that your user and the root user are members of the following 5 groups:

 pulse
 pulse-access
 pulse-rt
 audio
 video

Step 9: Run the command gnome-volume-control and set the Sound Theme to "No sounds" (Sound Theme is also accessible via System > Preferences > Sound)

Step 10: Try connecting headphones to different audio jacks/ports on the backpanel of the sound card until you hopefully hear sound

======================================================================================================

Please also read the following pages

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/sound-solutions-for-ubuntu-904-jaunty-users.html

http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/audio_intel_hda (check for correct /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf options at bottom of this page)

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578&highlight=audacity

for some initial suggestions.

You should add the following string to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file

options snd-hda-intel model=YOUR_MODEL

Valid model names (that replace YOUR_MODEL) depending on the codec chip, can be found at

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-jaunty.git;a=blob_plain;f=Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt

If you do not know your codec chip name, you can execute the following Terminal command to find out:

cat /proc/asound/card*/codec* | grep Codec

Each combination of audio codec, audio mixer and audio device name requires a very specific configuration in the alsa-base.conf file, if the audio chipset does not work out-of-the-box.

Make sure to set all channels to high volume levels in gnome-alsamixer.

Make sure all the different speakers (including 'Front', 'Master', and 'PCM") are NOT muted and NOT set to low volume levels in gnome-alsamixer.

If sound still does not work, try upgrading ALSA to the newest version, reboot and retest sound.

ALSA upgrade procedure is here:

http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/05/09/upgrade-alsa-1020-on-ubuntu-jaunty-904/

Kind regards,

Mark

I still can not hear sound from speakers of HDTV Panasonic connected to ATI HDMI graphic card.
Sound from headphone in motherboard is Ok .

Step 6: No dual boot. Only Ubuntu.

Step 8: I did not understand Step 8. I did not see group audio neither video.

I did not understend STEP 8, STEP 9, AND STEP 10.

See atteched screen.

I appreciate your help, but nothing changed so far (sound still only in motherboard and no sound in HDTV Speakers connected to ATI 4870X2 through HDMI cable).

Best Regards.

Hi,

Please first try this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy/paste each command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install gnome-alsamixer asoundconf-gtk

Step 3: copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

and add these lines to the end of the file:

# Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

If that model option does not help, try one of these alternatives:

 AD1988/AD1988B/AD1989A/AD1989B
   6stack 6-jack
   6stack-dig ditto with SPDIF
   3stack 3-jack
   3stack-dig ditto with SPDIF
   laptop 3-jack with hp-jack automute
   laptop-dig ditto with SPDIF
   auto auto-config reading BIOS (default)

Step 4: Then navigate to System>Preferences>Sound and change everything to HDA ATI HDMI (ALSA)

Step 5; reboot and retest sound

Step 6: Experiment with the audio settings in gnome-alsamixer and asoundconf-gtk until you get sound (hopefully). Both tools can be launched through the Terminal

If the previous procedure did not work, please try these 3 alternative procedures:

http://vaioubuntu.wordpress.com/2008/12/29/hdmi-works/
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/68942
http://vaioubuntu.wordpress.com/2009/07/08/hdmi-sound-output-switcher-for-pulseaudio/

Make sure to also try this:

You need to enable IEC958 switch for HDA ATI HDMI in volume control in gnome-alsamixer.
Then select HDA ATI HDMI (ALSA) in sound preferences where you can test the sound.

Regards,

Mark

Dear Mark,

I appreciate your reply, but still there is no sound from HDMI ATI HD4870x2 2GB. I did not install the original driver from ATI HD4870X2 becouse its
extension is *.run and I clicked twice over it and it did not installed.

Sound still only from motherboard headphone.

There is no sound yet from ATI HD4870X2.

I did not understand the step bellow:
If that model option does not help, try one of these alternatives:

 AD1988/AD1988B/AD1989A/AD1989B
   6stack 6-jack
   6stack-dig ditto with SPDIF
   3stack 3-jack
   3stack-dig ditto with SPDIF
   laptop 3-jack with hp-jack automute
   laptop-dig ditto with SPDIF
   auto auto-config reading BIOS (default)

On Step 4, when I changed everything to HDA ATI HDMI (ALSA), and I test it on System>Preferences>Sound, sound is mute (there is no sound).
When I play youtube sound still come from motherboard headphone on youtube.
And when play video from movie player, the video runs in mode 2 times faster without any sound.
On Step 6 I did not understand settings in gnome-alsamixer and asoundconf-gtk Both tools can be launched through the Terminal.

After I installed Realtek
http://vaioubuntu.wordpress.com/2009/07/08/hdmi-sound-output-switcher-for-pulseaudio/
When I run movie player, the flash player is dead. I need to re-install flash player. But when I play movie player again, the flash player goes dead again.

Best Regards,
Fernando.

Hi Fernando,

When I wrote "try one of these alternatives", I meant - for example - to replace the line

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack

in the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

with this line

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig

where the model option is from this list:

 AD1988/AD1988B/AD1989A/AD1989B
   6stack 6-jack
   6stack-dig ditto with SPDIF
   3stack 3-jack
   3stack-dig ditto with SPDIF
   laptop 3-jack with hp-jack automute
   laptop-dig ditto with SPDIF
   auto auto-config reading BIOS (default)

After every change to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file, you need to save the changed file, reboot and retest sound.

Can you please send us the output of the following command (as well) ?

sudo lshw -C sound

where lshw is LSHW but in small letters

Did you try these procedures as well?

Hello Mark,

Could you help me to install ATI proprietary driver?
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_cat95-inst.pdf

I typed:
xi@xi-desktop:~$ sh ./ati-driver-installer-9-6-x86.x86_64.run

but I got error:
sh: Can't open ./ati-driver-installer-9-6-x86.x86_64.run

When HD4870X2 run in Vista 64, I first installed ATI proprietary driver.
Now, my HD runs Ubuntu 9.04 64 bits only.

I appreciate your support.

You received the MD5 checksum errors because you saved several versions of the file https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-9-6-x86.x86_64.run

You have the file https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-9-6-x86.x86_64.run

and the file https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-9-6-x86.x86_64.run.1

and the file https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-9-6-x86.x86_64.run.2

and the file https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-9-6-x86.x86_64.run.3

in your home directory, if I am correct.

The previous ati-driver downloads were probably interrupted and not fully downloaded.

Try running the following commands in your home directory:

sudo mv ati-driver-installer-9-6-x86.x86_64.run.3 ati-driver-installer-9-6-x86.x86_64.run

sudo chmod 777 ati-driver-installer-9-6-x86.x86_64.run

sudo sh ati-driver-installer-9-6-x86.x86_64.run

Dear
Mark,

The ATI driver was installed with success. But I did not
find the catalystic control center in my computer.
And still there is no sound from ATI Radeon 4870X2 2Gb - On Ubuntu 9.04 64 Bits. Today with Ubuntu all sound comes from motherboard. But on Vista 64 I could choose sound from motherboard or speakers from HDTV / ATI Radeon (Radeon has DVI output connected to HDTV that has HDMI input through cable DVI to HDMI).What draw my attention is that there is no
device in sound preferences see attached file.

I
appreciate your support.

Best
Regards.

Hello Mark,

Now the ATI original driver was installed.
But there is no sound from ATI yet.
And the picture and photos got a sand effect (grained).
Although driver was installed, I did not see the Catalyst Control Center in my computer.

I followed the link bellow and managed to install lightscribe. Maybe I will need to put some line command like /opt/lightscribeApplications/SimpleLabeler/SimpleLabeler to run ATI CCC.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LightScribe

I appreciate your support.
Best Regards.
