software installation

Asked by serge

Hi Ubuntu

I being using linux 9.04 for a short time now and really love it. The only thing is I'm having a bit of difficulty getting my head around software installation. Whilst I like the add remove program manager, There are times when I would prefer a simple stand alone installer built into software for anything I download and my prefer to install at a latter date or on another machine, rather then downloading of the web every-time directly into my system. If there is any opportunity to look at maybe including something like a stand alone intaller or have a install program included in the software it self that would be really great and very much appreciated.

Kind Regards
Serge

gdebi does just that. You can install .deb files in that way. The regular installer is just downloads the .deb file and installs it. gdebi installs the single files which is harder to do because you need to install all the dependencies too.

Hope that helps

Hi Shane

Many thanks for your kind reply and yes I have tried some of the .deb files and most of them work great, it just some of the other types I get a bit lost with but working on how to figure it all out.

Cheers
Serge

Hi Shane

Thank you again. Sorry it hard to be specific right now, most of the time I'm ok with 9.04, its just the odd things here and there that I not sure about. I think when I first got some of the earilier version ie 8.10 and some of the other types of files like "rpm" which I tried to download install a few things but couldn't quite get them working. The only thing is I cant remember which programs they were now as I deleted the older 8.10 version. Nevertheless I just downloading tried skype stand alone again and that worked really well this time, but for some reason I tried it a few weeks ago and not much happened. Maybe I was missing some dependancies not quite sure. Same with cinelerra, whilst it works fine in 9.04 it kind of doesn't seem to install onto the menu but I realise this is not a program ubuntu supports. In the meantime I'll keep trying and download some more stand alone .deb files and play around with them again. Sorry Its just I still getting used to things on linix and not quite sure about the some of the terminalogy. Nevertheless I think you guys are doing a great job with linux and really do think its wonderful operating system.

Cheers
Serge

Linux distros neatly fall into about 8 main families; RedHat, Debian(Ubuntu), openSUSE, Slackware and so on. Although there are more similarities than differences between the families there are some differences even inside a family.

".rpm" stands for "RedHat Package Management"
".deb" is short for debian. Ubuntu is in the debian family.

You're welcome. :))
Really i guess the best way to find out is to go up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

it asks for your normal user password, not your SuperUserr/Root one. Then hunt around the menu's at the top of that, particularly in the "File" menu look for "Add downloaded packages" and see what you can do with that. I haven't yet tried that option myself but hope to find out a little more about it soon. Most people use "apt" or something from the command-line so i'll mark this thread to try to get some people that know more about that.

Good luck and regards form
Tom :)

I don't have anything to add to this 'support' or 'question', but serge, your email keeps attaching confidentiality summaries which is not only blindly stupid, it's incredibly ignorant. I'm not trying to say you are as you've been a perfect specimen for 'how to ask for support on a forum' but this confidentiality signature is just beyond dumb. This is a public forum, and all emails (sent to the bug trackers) is sent directly, so it seems that the email is from YOU to ME, when in fact technically it isn't. However since the email is directed in such a fashion it DEFEATS the confidentiality agreement and renders it NULL and VOID. What makes no sense to me is the fact that you are using a HOTMAIL account to email from rather than a enforceable domain or the like, so my guess is you implemented this for some asinine reason that is beyond comprehension, but regardless of reason, it would server a truer purpose if it was eliminated from these emails to launchpad since you have zero confidentiality within the context of your questions in this forum. Sorry if this was deemed rude in any way but I need to ensure you comprehend reality. If 'fixing' this is impossible (for the reasons it was implemented) I'd highly recommend creating a NEW account where you are not under such restrictions and using it in the future, just to avoid any legal hot water from your employer or entity forcing this disclaimer, since you are in great violation of it.
