Automatic updates were interrupted. How can I update manually

Asked by lily van schalkwyk

I have some updates to download but this was interrupted a while ago and I received a message to manually configure the updates myself. Unfortunqately I do not know Ubuntu yet as I have always been using Windows but do want to learn for I would like to switch to Ubuntu 8.0. Obviously, I would not know what to do in this case!!! Kindly help me please.

Thank you in advance!

Lily

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. Thank you so much for your kind replies to my problem!!! I appreciate it
very much indeed!

This was the message I received:

E: dpkg was interrupted. You must run dpkg-configure-a to correcdt the
problem.
E:_cache->open()failed, please report.

What does open a terminal <applications><accessories><terminal>
type:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and post the output mean?

As you can see, I am very new to Ubuntu and haven't yet worked with it very
much due to the fact that I am moving shortly and are terribly busy packing,
etc. As I also work twice at my stepdaughter's apartment, I lack the time
right now to concentrate completely on Ubuntu or excercise on it. I would,
however, like to correct this fault so that I can start practising as soon
as I possibly can because I like what I read about it and will certainly,
when I am more au fait with the new jargon and Ubuntu, participate in
translating certain things for you into Afrikaans.

I look forward to receiving your reply,

Lily

Hi,
it was meant to show the path to the application 'Terminal'.
The Terminal is very useful when the 'graphical' way fails at any case.

You should have two panels, the upper panel shows applications;
navigate to accessories and then choose terminal.
Described as:
applications -> accessories -> terminal
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GnomeTerminal

In this terminal window you are able to type commands, those commands are in simple terms behind every graphical application, which again is based on a script.

Suggested commands will update the packages list and download missing applications.

The terminal output will usually tell you what to do.

To repair the update issue please type or copy&paste this in the terminal:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
password for Lily: ##you wont see anything when you type, it's the password which is used on login
