AR242x wireless chipset not working in Ubuntu + where to find NetworkManager (nm-applet command)

Asked by Alex

Network option missing in 8.10

As I cannot connect to my wireless network from my AA1-150, I am obviously using the instructions how to do this. My Atheros AR242X is not being found. But whatever instruction I use they all point to for instance System->Administration->Network and I do not have this Network option. I have Network Tools in stead and with this option I cannot perform the instructions. So I would like to know if version 8.10 has an alternative for the option Network?

I assume u are looking for system-settings-network-configuration. But aslong as your wireless-card "Atheros AR242X is not found" it might ge difficult to use it.
So I would look for some lan-cable/wire and attach your computer through that and then go to "system-administration-hardware&drivers" and get your card activitated.

pls excuse if this is no help.

Hi,

In order to get your AR242X card to work, first follow this procedure:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/58467

After following the procedure, I think you just
need to connect using the NetworkManager icon, which is in the top right
corner of the Ubuntu panel.

See the link below for a screenshot of the NetworkManager icon:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetworkManager

Right-click on the Networkmanager icon and then choose the wireless
network you want to connect to. You might need to create a new
connection on eth1 or wlan0 first, or click on "edit network connection"
to see the list of available networks.

Mark

Hi Mark,

I carried out the procedures as you described, but it still doesn't work. I have to say that "my" Network Manager looks completely different from the screenprint you referred me to. After I clicked on it with the right mouse button I only see the following:

Enable Networking (which I obviously "ticked")
Connection Information (is "greyed out")
Edit Connections
About

and that's it!

Clicking on "About" shows me: Network Manager Applet 0.7.0

So as you can see, at this moment there is nothing I can do via the Network Manager.

Any idea how to proceed from here?

Thanks in advance/
alex.

Hi,

If you right-click on NetworkManager, then click on "edit connections", and then choose your wireless interface (eth1, wlan0, wifi0), you should see the list of available wireless networks around you. Click on the wireless network you want to connect to.

If this does not work, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (type each then hit <enter>)

sudo iwlist scanning
nm-tool
iwconfig
ifconfig
sudo lshw -C network
lspci -nn
lsusb
uname -a
dmesg | grep ound
dmesg | grep illswitch

Step 3: Post results (cut/paste terminal output from each command) here

Regards,

Mark

Hi,

Unfortunately, I see you followed the wrong procedure and are using ndiswrapper instead of the madwifi drivers.

The following site

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5711824#post5711824

is the right solution for your wireless issue. I will summarize the solutions steps (as described by forumuser reasoner):

Step 1: First under System/Administration/HarwareDrivers, disable both the Atheros HAL and the Atheros wireless thing and then reboot.

Step 2: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 3: Run the following commands (type each command then hit <enter>)

sudo apt-get install build-essential

sudo apt-get install subversion

cd ~

mkdir madwifi

cd madwifi

svn co https://217.24.1.142/madwifi/branches/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6

cd madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6

make

sudo make install

sudo gedit /etc/modules

Now add the Atheros kernel module to the list of modules to be automatically loaded at boot by adding "ath_pci" (without the quotes) to the end of the /etc/modules file. (Gedit editor automatically opens)

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Now add the following line at the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file:

blacklist ndiswrapper

Now you can reboot and it should work.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

you are awesome and terrific and I have been stupid! Reading your last instructions I realized that I had mixed up 2 or maybe even 3 different procedures from the links indicated in the different answers!

It is working perfectly well now, but that is what you expected I think!

Thanks very very much for your excellent help and I promise to be more careful next time I have to follow instructions!

Regards,
alex.

Dear Mark,

I am terribly sorry to bother you, but do you happen to know why a wifi
connection is no longer available after each program update that I perform?
I will then have to apply some if the steps (make & sudo make install) you
sent me to get it to work again. Is there a solution to prevent this?

Furthermore, would you please be so kind to tell me how to change the scree
resolution of my Acer Aspire One 150? It is fixed on 800 x 600 without any
other options to choose from. I would like to change it to 1024 x 600.

I thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,

alex march.

Hi,

You can try the solution from forumuser undegaussable at this location:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6649159

But this change might require you to blacklist the old ath_pci driver first.

Mark

Hi Mark,

thanks very much, will give it a try.
Do you know how to change the screen resolution of an Acer Aspire One 150 when it is fixed to 800 x 600?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
alex.

Hi,

You can try the solution from forumuser undegaussable at this location:

But this change might require you to blacklist the old ath_pci driver
first.

Regards,

Mark
