if only I were deaf....

Asked by Enigma

If I were deaf I would not mind the fact that I can't get a media player to work.

I gave up on Totem.

I've begged VLC to work as well for me as it has for others.

Still, silence reigns.

I have tried EVERY fix that I can find in here and on Google (I have 4 pages in OO of what I have done with all the links).

Basically, I have WONDERFUL graphics in VLC, but no sound. Nor can I access any of the buttons in the taskbar....I can only watch the movie playing, and force quit the program when it still doesn't speak to me.

No, dvds don't have any sound either....it makes the program freeze.

I've been at this for 3 days now....is there a hero in the house? Please!

Just in case it helps:

I have read enough to realize that Totem is an iffy media player, and that I should go with VLC, so I have. My problem is that I open the dvd to play and 2 things happen.
The first is if I choose “DVD Menus” then I can choose the options on the screen (but none of the buttons on the taskbar work) to play, the movie pretends like it is going to play, but when it tries to open up, it just hangs, and I have to force it to close.
The second option is if I just choose “DVD”, then the movie plays with incredible graphics, but there is no sound.

Also, when I put in an audio cd, the mouse will not click on anything in the taskbar, and the program freezes up.

I have been all through here, and tried these prior answers.

1. do you have libdvdcss2 installed?
2. and install w32codexs?

this should allow you to open and play dvd it did that for me. you can find both on vlc website.

how did you install vlc from apt-get or from one of the GUI interfaces to it?
