Totem Player Refuses to play any DVD's. VLC only plays some DVD's.

Asked by Dirk James Limon

My OS is currently Ubuntu 7.10. I tried to use Totem Movie Player to play a DVD and it said it needs plugins. So I went to add/remove programs under Applications and typed in GStreamer and installed all of those GStreamer plugins and Totem still says that it cannot play any DVD's, or it does not play them correctly. Then I installed the Movie Player with something called the xine backend, and it also failed to play a DVD. For instance, when I put my "Animusic" DVD in Totem only plays the sound and shows no video or any menus. But VLC player can play my "Animusic" DVD. But when I play, say "The 300 Spartans" with VLC, it cannot play it. So I decided to use Synaptic Package Manager to download libdvdcss, and download something called libdvdread-dev, and I already had libdvdread3 installed. And VLC still is not able to play many DVD's. Has anyone actually found a way to fix this, because I saw that many other people have this same problem. And this has nothing to do with what my actual question is, but has anyone else tried using Cisco's new curriculum(v 4.0) for Linux. I could not get it to work right. I select a chapter, click on launch course, and nothing happens. I would be grateful if someone was able to fix this problem.

I don't know that CD but have you already tried to open it with gXine:

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install gxine gxineplugin

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this help you

The terminal said that that was not a valid update. And I have that anyway. Anything else to try?

I would suggest you type the following commands:

  sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extra
  sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh

and try to use Totem again.

I already have libdvdread3, didn't you see that in my question? But thanks anyway.

Yes ok you already have gxine installed, but have you tried to open your cd with gxine...?

Thank you

Did I ask you to install libdvdread3? No.
Did you try my suggestion? Probably not.

Let me explain it to you.

When you installed the libdvdread3 package, it puts a script called "install-css.sh" into "/usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/". Here's what it says at the top of this file:

        # Many DVDs use css for encryption. To play these discs, a special library
        # is needed to decode them, libdvdcss. Due to legal problems, Debian and most
        # Linux distibutions cannot distribute libdvdcss
        # Use this shell script to install the libdvdcss under DEBIAN GNU/Linux

Maybe I'm just an idiot, but somehow I think it might be a good idea to run this script:

    sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh

In some countries (such as the USA), it might be illegal to use the libdvdcss library. If you want to be sure about the legality of using the libdvdcss library, please consult your lawyer.

If you already have the libdvdcss library properly installed on your system, then you should have said so and I apologize for waisting your time.

Still stuck, I already had it installed, I just did it through the GUI because I do not know how to use a UNIX command line. And to the one who said I should put a DVD while I have gxine, I said I tried to play a DVD and that it said it could not open the disc. But something odd happens. When I just stick a disc in Movie Player plays only the sound of just the movie, but I tell Movie Player to open the disc and it says it needs a plugin. Does that last part make any sense, I do not understand why that would happen. Oh well. Thanks for the help anyway. I will accept any other suggestions though.

So you didn't run the "sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh" command yet and you keep pretending you have the libdvdcss library installed.

Unless you added some third party repositories to your software sources, you can't install the libdvdcss library from the GUI. It's just not there for you to install.

To run a Unix command line application, opens the Gnome Terminal by selecting "Applications" -> "Accessories" -> "Terminal" from the top panel (the Ubuntu menu). Then type the following command in the terminal window:

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh

It will ask you a password. Put the user password you used to login. After the command is done (when you get your prompt back), just type "exit" then press the [enter] key to close the terminal window.

Tell me if you need more help with the command line part.

I did run that command, nothing changed when I put a DVD in. And you can do it from the GUI if you go to the package manager. So please, do you have
anything else that might work?

Thank you for your help Mr. Corriveau. I can now get VLC player to play DVD's but Totem still refuses to play DVD's. My mistake for not reading closely enough. But do you know why VLC can play DVD's but Totem player cannot? It does seem that the command you told me worked, but the last time I said I could not play a DVD I only tried using Totem Movie Player, not VLC.

        Sin Cere,

the first time you typed:

sudo /ur/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh

the second time you typed:

sudo/usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh

you needed to type:

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh

(you mistyped /usr and you didnt put a space between the file location and the sudo command)
