Tyiping unicode characters gives weird result

Asked by Alberto

Hello Techie,
typing unicode characters gives weird result, but not the expected one.

In GMail typing a unicode character moves the cursor from message to carbon copy.
In Facebook it zooms in the screen and opens Inspector. (In this page, too.)
In Libre Office 5 nothing happens.
In Mousepad nothing happens.
In Yahoo! mail nothing happens.

What do You think?
(Xubuntu 16-04 LTS 32 bit installed from a 0 errors Live session)
Many thanks, Alberto

I can add this information:
in the Live session my installation comes from typing Unicode codes works properly.

Do you think what happens now depends on some settings dealing with the keyboard? But I didn't find any...
I tried and looked for a solution even in Onboard Settings but nothing...
Greetings

How are you "typing Unicode letters"?

Revision history for this message
Alberto (alby-the-baldy) said :

Hello Manfred,
I type them this way:

1. (Held) Ctrl Shift U, release and hex code, space

or

2, (Held) Ctrl Shift U hex code and release, space.

Procedure 1. gives (in Libre Office 5): hex code I just typed

Procedure 2. gives (as above): nothing.

Thanks

Is there something wrong in the way I type Unicode characters?
Thanks

No, this is a correct way and should produce the desired characters.
I cannot duplicate this effect on my system.

Do you see an underlined U when pressing ctrl-shift-u?

Just another idea: have you defined ctrl-shift-u as keyboard shortcut for something else?

Alberto (alby-the-baldy) said :

Hello Manfred, it's a good one.
No ctrl+shit+u is not a shortcut for anything.

More, ctrl+shift+u is not listed in the keyboard Application Shortcut tab.
I guess whether it can be added to the existing shortcuts... What do you think?
Can we solve the problem this way?

Thanks

If you open System Settings -> Language Support, what is the value for Keyboard input method system ?

Revision history for this message
Alberto (alby-the-baldy) said :

Hello,
keyboard input method system is set to: XIM.
the other option is: none
If I set it to "none" nothing changes, I can't still type unicode characters...
Thanks

keyboard input method system should be "ibus".
Maybe you should try reinstalling the ibis package.

Oops, typo error, ... ibus package.

Done.
Removed and re-installed Input Method and Language Support.
I had to use Ubuntu software Canter because Software 3.20.1 kept on listing the two apps even if they had been removed.
More, USC warned me about being necessary to remove Language Support too, Software 3.20.1 did not.

But the option ibus for keyboard input method system is still not available. Just XIM or none.

(To me the whole installation has gone or is going to the dog. Even if you consider Qs 294103 and 292746. And I don't know where I can catch an ISO file without errors, according to Q292746)

Thanks for your help and patience

1. For https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/294103 I have already provided links that show that the difference that you see is caused by the "phased updates" approach.

2. I have just given an explanation in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/292746 that you gave a wrong parameter to the sha256sum -c command, and provided a link to a "how to verify an ISO file" page.

3. With respect to this question:

If you open "System settings - Language support", do you get a warning "language support is not fully installed"?
What is the output of the commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
sudo dpkg --audit
dpkg -l | grep -i ibus

Hello Manfred,
I very much appreciate your help, I would define it accurate.

If I open "System settings - Language support" I do not get any warning: the app just prompts "checking available language support" and then is ready.

The result of uname -a is:

Linux jalopy 4.4.0-24-generic #43-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 8 19:25:16 UTC 2016 i686 athlon i686 GNU/Linux

(jalopy is my computer)

The result of lsb_release -crid is:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Release: 16.04
Codename: xenial

The result of sudo dpkg --audit is:

(nothing)

The result of dpkg -l | grep -i ibus is:

ii libgusb2:i386 0.2.9-0ubuntu1 i386 GLib wrapper around libusb1
ii libusageenvironment3:i386 2016.02.09-1 i386 multimedia RTSP streaming library (UsageEnvironment classes)
ii libusb-0.1-4:i386 2:0.1.12-28 i386 userspace USB programming library
ii libusb-1.0-0:i386 2:1.0.20-1 i386 userspace USB programming library
ii libusbmuxd4:i386 1.0.10-2 i386 USB multiplexor daemon for iPhone and iPod Touch devices - library
ii libustr-1.0-1:i386 1.0.4-5 i386 Micro string library: shared library

Thank you!

"The result of dpkg -l | grep -i ibus is: ..."
You do not have the ibus package installed.

Try the commands

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ibus

Afterwards try setting keyboard input method system to "ibus" (if possible) and report the results.

Hello Manfred,
everything is fine, now!

I executed the first command you supplied.

(The system warned about packages no longer required and to use autoremove to get rid of them:
linux-headers-4.4.0-21 linux-headers-4.4.0-21-generic
linux-image-4.4.0-21-generic linux-image-extra-4.4.0-21-generic)

I executed the second command.

I typed sudo apt autoremove and removed the packages.

I launched Language support and the "ibus" option to keyboard input method system was available.
I set it.

I tried to type my check character, È, and it did't work.

I restarted the system.

I tried to type È and it worked! (Ctrl+Shift+u, release, code)

THIS SOLVED MY PROBLEM.
MANY MANY THANKS!
Alberto

I just want to supply a bit more information about what happened...
Now the system tray has a new, blue, alphanumerical icon made of two letters. I guess they're the symbols of the two languages I use. The icon wasn't there, before.
The icon is the graphical interface of Ibus 1.5.11
Thanks
