Different result scanning for updates with SU and Software 3.20.1

Asked by Alberto

Hello Techies,
why happens this? I mean:
I launch “Software Updater” to look for updates and it doesn’t find anything, to it the software on my computer is up to date.
At the same time I launch “Software Center for GNOME 3.20.1” (it came with the ISO file I used to install the o.s.) and it says updates are available.
And they are.
So: why didn’t Software Updater display updates and Software 3.20.1 did? Aren’t they supposed to be part of the same “family”? Do they check in different repositories?
I’m a bit upset.
I would much appreciate your suggestion…
Thank you, Alberto

Hello Andrew and Manfred,
it just happened.
I launched Software updater and the list was:

Security updates/Ubuntu base:
-Samba core libraries
-Samba winbind client library
-Shared library for communication with SMB/CIF servers

Other updates:
-Description: GObject introspection for the GStreamer Plugin Base library
-Ubuntu base:
--Default icon theme for GNOME (small subset)
--GStreamer libraries from the "base" set
--GStreamer plugins for X11 and Pango
--GStreamer plugins from the "base" set
(no authentication required)

I installed.

Then I launched Software 3.20.1
OS updates: includes performance, stability and security improvements.
(no authentication required)

I installed.
I'm sorry Software 3.20.1 doesn't list the detailed available updates

This time, 5 minutes ago, I could read the updates listed by Software 3.20.1:

binutils 2.26-8ubuntu2.1
gir1.2-javascriptcoregtk-3.0 2.4.11-0ubuntu0.1
gir1.2-webkit-3.0 2.4.11-0ubuntu0.1
libjavascriptcoregtk-3.0 2.4.11-0ubuntu0.1
libwebkitgtk-3.0-common 2.4.11-0ubuntu0.1
upstart 1.13.2-0ubuntu21.1
xserver-common 2:1.18.3-1ubuntu2.2
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.18.3-1ubuntu2.2

I installed, no authentication required.

"Software updater" did not list any available updates.
Thank you, bye

This afternoon both applications listed available updates but neither one nor the other could update the system because an error occurred, dealing with dependencies that don't meet.

I'd like to find a way to help you so that you can help me solve this problem...

Thank you, Alberto

Are these results correct?
Am I supposed to consider ok the way Software 3.20.1 run?
To me Software 3.20.1 doesn't run properly, even if I consider that some apps are listed by Ubuntu software Center 15.12 and not by 3.20.1.
Yowsup is an example...

I downloaded xubuntu-16.04-desktop-i386.iso from the University of Kaiserslautern, a German mirror.
I checked it with sha256sum and hashes matched.
Options -c and --strict gave weird errors, though (question 292746), as follows:

sha256sum -c --strict xubuntu-16.04-desktop-i386.iso

As I didn't know how to get on with my installation I tried and burnt the ISO file to a DVD, checked for errors and no errors were detected...
That's why I installed.

I guess the ISO was damaged or the installation went wrong even if I didn't read anything about it.

Thanks!

I am still suspecting that the difference that you see is caused by phased updates.
see e.g. http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/phased-updates.html for a list of packages that currently are in that status (list is not always current and only periodically updated)

So, what am I supposed to do?By the way, sometimes Software 3.20.1 uses a lot of system resource when scanning repositories for updates and the computer becomes very very slow, even if it never crashes.
Should I perform a new istallation of Xubuntu 16.04 LTS? I hope not...Or is there some way to fix it?For example removing 3.20.1 and reling only on SU and Ubuntu software center... But as far as I know (being a newbie) OS updates do not come via Ubuntu software center.Am I running the risk of my system being out of date as there are different results scanning for updates with SU and the built-in Software 3.20.1?Thanks a lot

I have some difficulties understanding what your problem really is.
There is a mechanism for phased updates, potentially leading to different listings of available updates.

Can you give a real example of the differences that you see between software updater and gnome software center, or any other details about your problem?

Revision history for this message
Alberto (alby-the-baldy) said :

Here is a real example, hello Manfred...

I turned on my computer a few minutes ago.
As I alway do at start up I launched Software updater to check for updates... No updates available, "the software is up to date on this computer".

Then I launched Software 3.20.1 and it listed:

libglib2.0-bin
libglib2.0-data
pyton3-software-properties
software-properties-common

and

Software&Updates 0.96.20.1 (cloudarchive...)

Now, I think the results of the scan for updates performed by the two apps are very different.
To me Software Updater's result is backward, obsolete, because when I asked for available updates it answered there were not.
In Xubuntu 14.04LTS I ran before, there was Software Updater for os and apps updates (correct me if I remember wrong) and Ubuntu Software Center for all the rest of sw.
In Xubuntu 14.04 LTS I didn't expect for os or apps updates coming from Ubuntu Software Center, but I expected them from Software Updates.

In 16.04 LTS I run now, there are two apps performing similar tasks and to me (mind you, I'm a newbie...!) the result should be the same or, better, there should be an app dealing only with os and apps updates (SU) and another dealing with all the rest of sw. To me something is mixed, now.

(Even if it is absolutely NO problem scanning with both apps and installing everything they list, as I always have done so far...)

I hope I could explain my problem and my curiosity and I thank you in advance.
(sorry for having been verbose...)
Alberto

See the current status of https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/phased-updates.html

The last block is for xenial and contains (among others)

...
software-properties 0.96.20.1 0% of users (was 20%) +13 0
glib2.0 2.48.1-1~ubuntu16.04.1 60% of users 1
...

This indicates that those packages that you see as difference are currently in the phased updates status.
Apparently your system currently does not match the criteria for receiving these packages yet. If you wait some more time, then also your system will show these updates in update-manager. This might take few hours, but can (in case of problems that pop up with the new version in the first batches of computers) also need a few days.
Apparently software-properties has a problem, and the rate was reset from 20% to 0%.

There is nothing that I can add more.

I thank you for helping me, Manfred and Andrew.
I keep thinking there is something working not properly in Software 3.20.1 as it behaves in a strange and, to me, untrustable way. My next question is going to be right about it...
Thanks
