No sound playing games/ Ok for music/ Tests ok

Asked by David McWilliams

No sound when playing games. Toggle "s" does not have any effect.
Speakers working. Can play music files.
Sound test ok. Sound effects ok.
Running Ubuntu 12.04 (New to Ubuntu)

software center.

If you run:

killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*

Then wait 10 seconds and then use the apps, do you get sound?

I just copy and paste this entire line into the Terminal? Correct? and press enter and it asks for password. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or not. I've never used Ubuntu before having just had Windows for ever so I'm still learning. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

I'm starting to wonder if the problem might be a defective install of Ubuntu because I loaded it onto my Toshiba laptop ( with the same install disc) and have the same issues. Sound works fine playing music, sound test works fine and sound effects play but no sound on any games.

Yes it's all one command, just copy it in one lump and it will add the line to the file to you.

I am going to close this issue as still unresolved. After reading hundreds of posts concerning this same issue and trying numerous suggestions I feel that this is a huge issue with Ubuntu 12.04 and not just a simple fix.
I would like to thank you for taking the time to help me. I will continue to read posts and google about this issue.
