how do I find missing packages and install them
I went to the Update manager did my updates, but there are two that will not update they are "libraries for the GNU image manipulation program libgimp2.0 and headers and other files for compiling plugins for GIMP libgimp2.0-dev"
it says missing packages can not install. I see that GIMP is not working now, that sucks.
so How do I get the missing packages, to get it up and running again

So you are mixing repositories from different versions of Ubuntu (natty, quantal and precise). Quantal is not even released yet, not even production ready.
Mixing repositories like this should NEVER be done, as it can AND will break your package manager (apt-get), as you can see here.
You are running Ubuntu 11.04 (natty), so the /etc/apt/

Please send output of this command:
ls -lart /etc/apt/
Run this command to edit the /etc/apt/
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/
In that file, remove all configuration lines that do NOT contain the word 'natty'
SAVE the change to the file /etc/apt/

Hi ,
totally agreed with Mark. You have mixed up all these sources.
An easier way that might be correct your sources.list is
from terminal
sudo wget "http://
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Thanks

The PPA doesn'tsupport your release. Natty is also dead in October so I suggest you clean install Precise and remove Natty. Not only is it the latest stable release it is also LTS so is supported until 2017
Mixing packages from other distributions doesn't work and causes all kinds of issues. There is a reason why some packages are for Quantal and some are not. Doing what you are doing will break dependencies. It's also why Debian packages don't work either.

I only us the update manager so how did this happen? I had to restart with a cd of 10.04 and updated to 11. about 6 months back. now I don't remember how to save my files and reinstall, is there a page or video with the instructions for doing this?

Hi ,
you have all these PPAs , from natty , presice , lucid , quantal. You added PPAs from different versions of Ubuntu.
You sources.list are Ok , now , but apt reads also from PPAs for the update- upgrade.
So open a terminal and write
+++++++
gksudo software-
+++++++
at the opened window go to "Other Software" and delete everything (not just untick , but delete-remove) except "Canonical Partners" and "Independent" .
Then close window and return to terminal and do
+++++++
sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists* -vf
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
+++++++
Thanks

If command
+++++++
sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists* -vf
+++++++
returns "rm: cannot remove `/var/lib/
then use this command instead
+++++++
sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists*
+++++++
Use the command with caution. Please copy-paste command(s) from here to your terminal for more accuracy
Thanks

the update manger is empty so it got that fixed. then I tried to install GIMP and get this
This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time.

Hi ,
if you fixed that , then please mark this question as solved and open a new one specific to Gimp.
I assume gimp problem relates to proposed-updates ?
Check again Update manager
+++++++
gksudo software-
+++++++
in "Updates" check if "pre-released updates(
UN-tick backports too. Then run again
+++++++
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gimp
+++++++
Also give the results of
+++++++
ls /etc/apt/
+++++++
Thanks
