TaskCoach Error - even reinstallation doesn't work

Asked by Harald Thielen-Redlich

Mac OS 10.6.8, machine i486 (MacBook 2008).
After changing some prefs, TaskCoach crashed.
Restart App: "TaskCoach Error".
After reinstallation: same.
Reboot: same.
Reboot, AppCleaner, reinstallation: same.

Installed older version: works, but doesn't open the latest files.
Will I ever be able to use TaskCoach on my machine again (without reinstalling the system)?

Thank You

Several issues with your question:

1. Reinstalling doesn't reset the preferences. To reset, you must remove the .ini file:
https://answers.launchpad.net/taskcoach/+faq/1061
use a program like "Houdini" to show the hidden files

2. There were bugs which we have fixed, try the latest bugfix release:
http://www.fraca7.net/TaskCoach-packages/latest_bugfixes.py

3. The files can be opened with old versions anyway if necessary, just edit the .tsk file with Text Editor and change the version back to match the old version number (but please make sure you have backed up, generally backing up is good)

So the full answer is: all of the issues are able to be dealt with, you just haven't dealt with them as necessary. But hopefully it is just a bug we have fixed. And if the latest bugfix version doesn't work, please let us know because we want to know if there are outstanding issues.

Thanks for your patience, sorry for the hassles.

Cheers,
Aaron

Hi Aaron,

thank You very much! Your latest tip that my new TaskCoach installation was good ("back up frequently"). I did more, because I had made export files for iCal. But thanks for Your fast reaction I don't need them actually.

Best regards

Harald, I am confused. Did you understand the rest of my answer? So I would hope everything is now fixed and works with Task Coach latest version. Does it work now? Did you do the things I suggested? One reason I ask is that you marked this question "Open" again instead of solved.

Best,
Aaron

Sorry Aaron,

but on my screen I cannot see a button "Open", only "This solved my problem". The case is that I followed Your instructions and everything works now.
By the way, I reinstalled the older version now because the new one has a problem with the display of events in the calendar.

Best regards

Harald

A problem with the display of events in the calendar? I don't know what you mean. I hope you could please try the new version again, and post a bug report with a screenshot and description at our actual bug report system:
https://sourceforge.net/p/taskcoach/bugs

Thanks

Hi Aaron,

I did not make a bug report because I found out now that it was just a handling mistake. I don't know why, but after installation of the latest bugfix the orientation of the calendar changed to "horizontal", even though I cannot remember having changed anything. Now I tried "vertical" and everything is fine.
Should I really post this as a bug report? Maybe it was my fault.

Best regards

Harald

Hello, Aaron and Harald!

I have practically the same trouble: after update to version to 1.3.22 there are no chance to edit the task (button on panel, submenu and even strange command "return" didn't work).
OS win7 x32.
I've tried to reinstal older version (1.3.22) but - fail. The Dropbox helped me)
But:
1) 1.3.22 have some troubles with the speed of opening window "edit task"
2) will it be possible to edit tasks in 1.3.24 or some "night" edition?

Thanks! And sorry for my English :)

Vlad, see the comments above. Reinstall does not remove settings. You must remove the .ini. Harald says it is fixed for him.
It should already by fixed. Try removing your .ini file, see my first reply above.

Hello, Aaron!

I saw it. I've totally deleted the directory and instal older release into it. The tsk file is opened because i found its older version in the cloud. So there are no problems) Only questions. I'll try in other words.

1) I foud your project wonderful and decided to use it. It was release 1.3.22
2) There are trouble with speed of internal wondows. It's not dangerous but annoying.
3) Some day ago there appeared new release (1.3.23). I decided to instal it - i suppose the trouble with the speed has fixed.
4) There was another problem. Also not dangerous, but annoyind - impossible to edit tasks.
5) so there are to ways: (use tasks where i can't edit time? comments and so on) or (use "lazy"tasks)

Question is that: are there any solutions (midle versions) or i should wait for new release 1.3.24 ?

First, to be clear: The directory you deleted is the one with the .ini file, yes?
See https://answers.launchpad.net/taskcoach/+faq/1061

It does NOT work to delete the Task Coach program without deleting that file. Unless the .ini file is removed, it does not reset.
The place where you install Task Coach, that directory is not enough to remove, you must ALSO remove the .ini file.

Anyway, yes, you can try the latest bugfix release if you want:
http://www.fraca7.net/TaskCoach-packages/latest_bugfixes.py

Thank you for your patience.

Anyway, editor should be able to be opened. This is a big issue so if you can't get it fixed, we want to know.
But, to answer the question: you can edit in the normal viewer by showing different columns and clicking once to activate editor. Unfortunately date editing in the column view is the slowest of all the things, but we're working to improve.

Cheers
