When adding new library not seen in add component

Asked by Ken Goodnow

When I add a library to EESCHEMA it takes the add and I see it in the list, but none of the elements are shown in the component library. The library path is to the directory not the library name (maybe that is the issue, but the add won't allow me to point to the library.)

I have tried this with multiple libraries from different sources. On windows XP, and windows 7. I also have tried the
KiCad-2012-01-19-BZR3256-stable-Win_full_with_components_doc_install.exe release and the older release
KiCad-2011-07-08-BZR3044-WinXP_full_with_components_doc_install.exe

I must be doing something incorrect but I don't know what. When I look in the .pro for the project there is a line with the library directory path in it.

The library path that is added is to the directory, does not link to the actual library, the ADD doesn't go down that far.

Can you help?

Thank you

library_path_grief_counter++

You are not alone, medium terms plans exist to make this easier.

Is there a way to do this, like adding the new ones to the existing libraries. Or modifying the .pro. I don't mind the work if I just knew what to do. Is there a link to something that would tell me.

Sorry about the grief.

Love the tools.

This is a known problem and is related to this question:

I hope this helps. At some point in the future this problem will be resolved. The same problem exists in Pcbnew when accessing footprint (module) libraries.

I think there might be some confusion. The library I am trying to add never shows up in the component list. I created a component that has a completely unique name - I used my initials and a random number. But the new component never shows up, it's like its not seeing the library.

Do I have to name the library directory a certain way or place it in a certain place in the directory structure.

Library is not seen at all - this is not a component naming thing from what I can see.

Thanks for looking at this.

Did you use a unique library file name as well? I just tested this with
the latest testing version (BZR 3762) and duplicate library names are
apparently filtered out of the library viewer even if they are in
different paths. I've never observed this behavior before because I
never used a duplicate library name. This issue will also be resolved
when the schematic file and component libraries are changed.

Sorry, I just found my problem. I was only putting the search path in not adding the library. Duhhhhh!!! Sorry about that, but hey I turned up a new bug (feature?) for you on a Friday. Yeah for me.

Thank you very much and for being patient.

I think the whole KICAD is great, I am trying to propogate it into the local MAKE community here.

Thank you again.

Ken, sorry I could not be more helpful, but that dialog has never made sense to me, and I
was not armed with sufficient understanding to offer help on it.

(Once I stared at that dialog an entire day, taking only a lunch break. At the end of the
day it made the same amount of sense, zilch.)

I'm glad you figured it out, next time you can help someone else, perhaps me.
