Chinese and Japanese text input ( vertical )

I would like to input the Chinese and Japanese text on artwork file, but I can't to do it from vertical mode. At now, I just have able to insert the text for horizontal only. Can you please improve it and additional this function? I am really love this software, should you please try it?

I am using GIMP 2.6 version. Have somebody got the answer for photo clipping? I would like to decrease the photo background, and than insert the file into inkscape.
Please tell me which file format that will make this effect. I don't wanna to use the jpeg format, because was I will find the photo background.
