Photo clipping and file format

I am using GIMP 2.6 version. Have somebody got the answer for photo clipping? I would like to decrease the photo background, and than insert this file into inkscape.
Please tell me which file format that will make this effect. I don't wanna to use the jpeg format, because was I will find the photo background.

Hi, weber
Inkscape itself have clipping function.

Try the next workaround:

1) Paste or embed your original bitmap image into Inkscape
2) Draw the desired clipping path above image
3) Select both image and clipping path
4) Select Object ~> Clip ~> Set

That's all.
