Printer not discovered cannot print

Asked by Daisy Bachmann

 Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon
HP LaserJet Professional P1102w

The printer has stopped working all of a sudden a few days ago since applying system updates on 20Jan2021.
I have installed the latest hplip-3.20.11 over the previous hplip-3.17.10 when the printer failed to print. However, hp-setup cannot discover the USB connected printer although it is listed in CUPS. I changed the URI to USB connected in Mint's System Settings\Printers and tried to print a test page. The job just kept on "processing: rendering complete". hp-check -t said that my printer model is unsupported. Your list of supported printers clearly indicated that hplip-3.20.11.run is the correct download for my Linux distribution. A test page ca b printed after adding printer, but documents sent cannot be printed. The status n\in CUPS is "Idle - Filter failed".

I followed your automatic installation instructions. Running hp-setup on restart of the computer, plugin was successfully downloaded. On the next step, I selected the 1st option (printer connected to USB) but the error reported "no devices found on bus: usb".

<lpinfo -v> showed that the printer's connection is "direct usb". On my computer's System Settings\Printers, it showed that the printer is "connected to local host".

Hi

Can you try changing the model string in /usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat as hp_laserjet_professional_p_1102w.
And see if it is getting discovered.
Also please install plugin file

I've installed hplip-3.20.11, printer is discovered but cannot install plug
in running setup. Download or pointing to the separately downloaded plugin
file didn't go anywhere.
Tried many times but with same failed message.

Hplip-3.17.10 is installed with Mint19
How do i purge version 3 20.11?

Without the plugin I cannot print.

There is the possibility to download the plug-in installer from https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/plugins and to start the installation with the command
sh hplip-3.20.11-plugin.run

Hi
I did the sh install but got the following:
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing HPLIP 3.20.11 Plugin Self Extracting
Archive..............................................................
Error importing HPLIP modules. Is HPLIP installed?

I definitely have hplip3.20.11 installed although 3.17.10 is still showing
as installed in Synaptic Software Manager. The printer miraculously printed
one page of the document I was working on, but has since failed to print
with a plugin required message. The print jobs stopped at the "Processing"
stage.
I am not sure whether hplip-3.17.11 should be completely uninstalled
within Synaptic?

I also tried manually selecting the plugin to install, but my sudo password
kept being rejected as incorrect. I have only one password for root and
sudo. Therefore I have no way of installing the plugin because the normal
method of installing within HP Setup does not work.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

You should have only on version of HPLIP installed.
Before trying to install 3.20.11 from the hp pages, you should uninstall everything belonging to the 3.17.11 version.

"my sudo password kept being rejected as incorrect"
You have to be aware that you do not get any feedback when typing the password at a "sudo" password request (no echo, not even '*' placeholders).
Just "blind" type your password.

What happens if you try the command (in a terminal window):
sudo id

Can you help with this problem?
