duplex printing dies on last page - fixed in 9.10 in some apps

Asked by moose

Printing from firefox doing a 4up duplex gets stuck.

***This appears to be fixed on ubuntu 9.10 ***
on a hp j6480 the last page stays in the duplexer. the only way to reset the printer is to unplug it.
any ideas what wrong?

here is an interesting fun fact. it works fine in draft mode but doesn't work in normal or high quality. timing issue maybe? since draft mode prints faster.

I can reproduce this. We're looking at a solution and, although I can't promise, in theory we will have a fix in the next release. If not then a future release at some point.

I'll post more information if I have a workaround otherwise.

Thanks for your support of HPLIP--we appreciate it.

Hi,

has this problem been solved yet?

I have the same problem with hplip-3.9.8-15.pm.27.9 on Opensuse 11.1 with all-in-one C7280. On duplex printing, the last page comes out only after about 5 minutes, but the printer then goes into "printing cancelled" flashing mode and remains so forever. Reset by on/off switch says that printer is stopped, but it does not and hangs. Then comes "incorrect switch off" etc. Sometimes only unplug helps.

Regards,

Charles

I have the problem too. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and have an HP Officejet J6480 connected via my wired LAN. My version of hplip installed is 3.9.8-1ubuntu2. When I open /etc/samba/smb.conf using gedit and Print Preview, all the pages show as expected. When I print in duplex, however, the entire document (6 pages) prints thru the 5th page but then the printer stops and several minutes reports that the print job was cancelled and ejects the 5th page (properly printed on one-side and blank on the other side where the end of the document should have been). Then, I set the printer to 1-sided and nothing printed.

When I installed the printer (System > Admin > Printing > New > Network Printer), there were two HP options that were offered; namely, Officejet J6400 series and HP Officejet J6400. I selected the former. Is this correct?

Below is the hp-check.log file created by hp-check. Do I need to install all of the packages listed in the Summary section at the bottom?

P.S.: I'm a newbie to Ubuntu

I have the same problem. Officejet 6110, C8955a duplexer. Mageia 1 (hplip 3.11.3a) and Mandriva 2010.2 (hplip 3.10.x and still there after update to 3.11.5) Only happens with documents with an odd number of pages. Documents with even numbers of pages print OK. KDE 4 reports that printing is finished, but the status light on the printer keeps blinking. Cancel button has no effect. Page is ejected when the power button is pressed.

Status according to HP Device Manager with final page still in duplexer: "Print job is continuing." Code: 1002

Hi Thomas,

Can you post us the output of "hp-check -t" command.

Thanks & Regards,

This is from the Mageia 1 installation. Whatever was installed was done by the distro's printer installation GUI. Lots of seemingly extraneous stuff here, but this is what I get when I run the requested command: (Note: CUPS version 1.4.6 installed. For some reason, this check couldn't detect it.)

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.11.3a)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.3

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied
tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully
compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb,
.rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to
successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the
above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Saving output in log file: hp-check.log

Initializing. Please wait...

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for providing the hp-check log. The log show that there are a lot of missing dependencies. Can you please install those dependencies. The latest hplip version is 3.11.7. You can manually install it by following the instructions provided at http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/mandriva.html.

Can you please provide us the steps to reproduce the issue. I meant to know which application you are using to print and how you are setting the duplex option.

Thanks & Regards,
Goutam Kodu

I did not compile HPLIP - that was done by the developers/maintainers of the two distros. Looking up the runtime dependencies, I see that they are indeed installed, somewhere. I have no idea why hp-check couldn't find them. Information from a thread on gmane.linux.mageia.user indicates that a Mageia update to hplip 3.11.7 is in the pipeline, and is going through testing now. Since I'm a bit out of my depth when it comes to things like manually installing hplip, I believe it would be best for me-and you- to wait for that update. It probably would be more beneficial to other users of Mageia, as well. Meanwhile...

The problem shows up any time I try to do duplex printing of an odd number of pages. I've seen it most often with Adobe Reader (always whatever is latest, for the last year or so), because that is what I use most often when printing double-sided, but I have also seen it with Ocular and Firefox (just tested with Firefox 6.0.2). I have not been able to get LibreOffice to print double-sided at all (only options I see for double-sided are "off" and "<ignore>"), but I believe that is a separate issue. Single-sided printing works normally, as does double-sided printing of an even number of pages.

Two workarounds exist, neither of which is particularly satisfying. One is to print the document and use the power switch to eject that final page. The other is to print all but the final page as double-sided, and print the final page in another job as single-sided.

Working from memory on this comment...

I do not remember having this problem with Mandriva 2010.0, which, if I recall correctly, used a 3.9.x version of hplip. I did make the mistake of installing a 3.10.x version of hplip from Mandriva's backport repositories, and that had a duplexer bug where the second page was printed upside down and backwards. I had to go back to hplip 3.9.x. (Wish I could remember the values for those "x"'s.)

Speculation: Perhaps in fixing the 3.10.x bug, this one was introduced.

Give me a couple of days, and I can create a VirtualBox guest of Mandriva 2010.0, and confirm the above information, if you think it would be helpful.

Hi Thomas,

Thank you very much for that information. I tested printing odd number of pages in Mandriva 2010.2 using LibreOffice application. I installing hplip-3.11.7 manually by following the instructions provided .. I first enable the Duplexer installed check box in the options installed tab in cups (localhost:631). Then i changed the PageSize(Media Size) to LetterAutoDuplex and set the duplex option to Long Side and clicked the set default option in cups (localhost:631). I opened a 5 page doc file in LibreOffice . Selected the print option and choose the printer and set the Duplex option to <ignore> and PageSize to LetterAutoDuplex. The print out came fine as expected.

I still have to check with Adobe Reader application. I am not sure about why the last page get hung up in the print queue for you. Will do some more checking and try to reproduce it .
Will update you on the same.

Thanks & Regards,
Goutam Kodu

Interesting. I didn't look at the other paper size options - it said "Letter" and that was what I was using. I don't usually have a need for double-sided printing of LibreOffice documents. I had no idea the various "autoduplex" options were there.

Seems like a strange way of doing it, but I suppose there's a good reason for it. Thanks for the tip.

Hmmm. Just tried printing three pages of family cookie recipes from LibreOffice in Mageia, using the distro-supplied hplip 3.11.3a. Duplex printing did work when setting LibreOffice Writer as above. However, the final page did not eject. After the usual drying time, the paper was taken back into the duplexer, and stayed there until I used the printer's power button.

Perhaps I shouldn't wait for the Mageia developers to put hplip 3.11.7 in updates after all.

I installed hplip 3.11.7 into Mandriva 2010.2 manually, using the instructions supplied. Didn't seem to make any difference. The last page still hangs up. I am beginning to wonder if something is wrong with the printer. Perhaps I should move the duplexer to my Deskjet 5650 and see if that makes any difference.

Or maybe I should just learn to live with it.

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for letting us know on the same. I could not reproduce it on Mandriva 2010.2 on any other duplexer printers. Can you let me know if that reproduces after moving the duplexer to Deskjet 5650. Also can you sent me the "hp-check -t" log.

Thanks & Regards,

I'm using Mageia right now, and must soon get back to work making a
living, so I can't do much at the moment. However...

You said "send" rather than "post," so the attached file is the output
of hp-check -r -t, as of Saturday night. I note that the description for
the Officejet 6110 says hp-cups 3.11.5, while that for the Deskjet 5650
says 3.11.7. No idea why. I recall attempting to install each printer
twice, once using hp-setup and another using printerdrake. I'm not sure
which this output is from, but there seemed to be no difference in the
way they acted with either installation method.

I am giving serious consideration to a completely fresh install of Mandriva 2010.2, including an upgrade to hplip 3.11.7 and fresh hidden directories except for .virtualbox, .mozilla and .thunderbird. directories. Maybe that would get rid of some of the baggage it's now carrying from older stuff.

Switched the C8955 duplexer from the Officejet 6110 to the Deskjet 5650, but it acts the same. The paper is taken back into the printer at the end of a three-page document, but not ejected. This is happening in both Mandriva 2010.2 and Mageia 1. I did notice during this test that, going from the sounds, the paper is moved back out of the printer the amount of the margin. That is, it's moved into position where the fourth page, if there was one, would start to print.

Only thing I can think of to track this down is to try a completely clean, basic install of one Linux or the other, check out the duplexer, then add extra stuff one by one until I find what breaks it. Since Mageia is my production install, Mandriva is elected.

Finally got the chance to try a fresh install to see if that would take care of the problem. I chose to install Mageia 1, rather than Mandriva 2010.2, as that is the Linux I'm most interested in getting to work. Unfortunately, the problem exists right from the start, before applying updates from Mageia, before installing anything other than the basic Mageia packages, and before installing any third-party software.

I began to think I had a hardware problem, even though it didn't act like one, but when I tried printing a three-page pdf from a VirtualBox Windows XP guest (Mageia host), the duplexer functioned as it is supposed to. So, it has to be a software problem.

I have exhausted my abilities. Looks like all I can do is use my workaround (print that last odd page by itself), or (shudder) use Windows XP to print these jobs. Thanks for looking, anyway.

I had this problem on 16.04 with an HP 6110 Officejet printer (connected via USB). Whenever I'd print a document with an odd number of pages, the last page would get "stuck", and the only way to reset the printer was to actually unplug it (the power button wouldn't work).

The solution was to go into printer settings and remove the printer, and then re-add it, making sure to choose "HP Linux Imaging and Printing (HPLIP)" rather than "USB" as the Connection.

Even if the printer is physically connected with USB, selecting the "USB" option when setting up the printer causes trouble with duplex.

Can you help with this problem?
