Scanning not working on CM1312nfi MFP

Asked by Bart Kummel

I just bought an HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi. Isuccessfully intalled HPLIP. I used the version from the HPLIP website (2.8.9), because the Ubuntu-supplied version is too old (2.8.2) for this printer.

The printer works just fine, but I cannot get the scanner to work. When I click on the "Scan" icon on the "Actions" tab in the HP toolbox, the XSane "scanning for devices..." dialog appears for less than a second. Then it disappears and I get an "Error" dialog box, saying: "Failed to open device `hpaio:/net/HP_Color_LaserJet_CM1312nfi_MFP?ip=192.168.1.68': Error during device I/O." The dialog only has one "Close" button.

I've enclosed some further details below. Thanks in advance for helping me out!

Best regards,
Bart Kummel

Some details:
- I running Ubuntu 8.04
- As mentioned, I have a HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP device
- The device is connected via the network
- hp-check output:

I just found this question: https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/43929, which makes me a little bit sad. I bought the CM1312 because I read on one of the pages that scanning IS supported through HPLIP. The answer on the abovementioned question states that that page is wrong, and that scanning is not currently supported. The good news is that you are apparantly working on it. But the bad news is that you still did not update that page with the wrong information and that I made my decision to but this machine based on incorrect information! I hope the scanning support will be added very soon!

Best regards,
Bart Kummel

Hey Bart.

Sorry for the confusion. I am curious on what page did you see that scanning is supported?

We are still working on it and hope to have a resolution soon.

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for your reply. I'm relieved that I will be able to scan in the
(hopefully near) future. The page thtat states that scanning is already
available is this one:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/color_laserjet.html.
In the table it shows a "Yes" in the column "Scan to PC" for the cm1213nfi.
I think you should change that to "No" or "Coming soon".

Thanks!

Hi!

I also did read this page and bought a bought HP CM1312nfi printer.
I am absolutely disapointed, that I am not able to scan with any linux-client.

Do you have a presentiment when the scanning funtion of this printer will be supported?

Hopefully, Sandra

I too, bought this printer.
The only way I found to use the scan function, was to insert a memory card in the printer (you can insert several types of memory cards on the front bottom right corner. Then use the scan menu to choose 'scan to memory card'.
The memory card becomes visible as an external disk and you can download the scanned image.

I did connect it with a straight cable to the PC as well as via the IP network, that might make a difference with your setup.

On a side note, since I upgraded to ubuntu 8.10 I can't print images anymore. Text is no problem, test pages either, but pictures yes. The JPG files get sent to the printer, the printer reacts by telling he is doing the printing, but nothing happens.
Anybody else having the same problem?

Michel

Hi,

I see the page at http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/color_laserjet.html still has a "Yes" in the "Scan to PC" column for the CM1312nfi printer. I suggest to update this page soon; this can prevent HP customers from getting disappointed. Of course an even better solution would be to add "scan to PC" functionality for this printer to the next release of HPLIP.

@Michel: If I were you, I would ask the Ubuntu 8.10 question in a separate thread, that increases the chance on a quick answer.

Best regards,
Bart Kummel

I just found a link to the release notes of version 2.8.10 (http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/release_notes.html) in the answer of another question about the same problem: https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/43929. It seems scanning is added to version 2.8.10 of HPLIP. I did not have a chance to test it yet. I will let you know as soon as I have tested it.

Bart,

I tested it yesterday.
Scanning works, via USB and over TCPIP.

The problem I'm experiencing with ubuntu 8.10 is in printing.
And even then, it's only when printing images (JPG)
To complicate it even further, it manifests itself only with certain software (Eye of Gnome, Gimp) and no problem at all with e.g. gThumb Image Viewer. Very strange, because even with Eye of Gnome, you see the picture being sent to the printer, then the printer acknowledges receiving it, and starting to print, only to abort with an error.

But you're probably right, I should open a new issue for this. Just wanted to let you know.

Michel
