Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution can switch between an online mode (File -> Work online) and an offline mode (File -> Work offline). I'm using the german translation, so the exact wording could be different in english.

In Dapper Drake and Edgy Eft (and possibly before that, I can't remember) evolution remembered the online/offline mode from the last session. In Feisty Fawn, it doesn't: At startup, evolution is in offline mode, always.

Thank you for your bug. Does it happen without network-manager installed?

No, removing the packages "network-manager" and "network-manager-gnome" is a workaround for this bug. It's also a workaround for bug #97520, Gaim being unable to autoconnect on startup. Of course it's not a fix for either bug.

I'm using a Fritz!X USB ISDN card, with CAPI4Linux and the fxusb driver, if that is of any interest to you. I'm not using the network-manager applet, because it is of no use to me. I cant use it to start a connection and it doesn't see active connections, anyway. I manually connect using pon and poff (because of bug #85469, dial-on-demand not working in Feisty). System Monitor says that the network-manager process was sleeping when this bug occured to me.

How have you determined that this is a duplicate of bug 82334? That bug looks like it's related to leaving interface settings even when there is no NICs connected, while this bug is releated to persisting the offline/online setting of Evolution...?

(BTW I'm not denying that the bug is in network manager, or that they are indeed the same. It's just that I'm unable to see the connection from the two descriptions. So it's intended as a real question, gathering information I may use for a workaround)

I'm seeing the behaviour I first would have reported as this bug's title (ie. "Evolution doesn't remember online/offline settings"). At first I saw it as releated to suspend/resume, but now I've determined it to be caused by connecting to a new NIC.

Ie. when I connect to a new NIC (eg. by switching from a wired LAN connection to a WLAN), an offline Evolution will be switched online, and if it cannot connect to the Exchange web service it expects to find, pop up the annoying password dialog.

Some information about my system, and bug:
 - The system is a Dell D610 laptop (Intel Pentium M, Broadcom WLAN)
 - I'm using network-manager, and have been using it since Breezy
 - I did not see the issue of an offline Evolution being set online (eg. when resuming from a suspend) on Breezy
 - The system I'm using was originally installed as Breezy Badger in February 2006, upgraded to Dapper in July 2006, and upgraded first to Edgy, and then to Feisty on May 4 and 5 2007

I haven't tried without network manager on Feisty, since that won't cut it for me anyway. Currently I'm living with killing and restarting Evolution.
