Bug Description

When I print a document in Inkscape (0.47pre3 , built Sep 28 2009) the default paper size is A6. But as I always print on A4-paper (21*29,7 cm), I need to change the paper size everytime I print a document. Why the program does not remember I changed the default printing size to A4?

I am amazed how importance of this error can be classified as "low".
Who needs a graphics program that cannot print?
Can you imagine a music player without sound?
For many years I am waiting for a solution that does not come.

I wrote "I cannot print at all", you answer "it is not important".
What can be more important than this?

Previously, it was my favorite program, and now I do not use it at all.
I also advise against using it to my clients and friends.
Instead, I advise purchase of Corel Draw which can print.
I think it is a great shame for you.
Or maybe it is done deliberately so that people stop using Inkscape?
I can't understand this.

This is one of the great failings of the Open Source Software model. If the problem does not affect a developer, then it probably won't get fixed. As a user your only real options is to propose a fix or to find (and likely pay) someone to fix the bug for you.

You are in luck, though. I am also feeling the pain (HP Laserjet 1012) and I do a little development, so I'll take a peek at it. I cannot guarantee that I will be able to provide a fix anytime soon, but I can assure you that someone else is interested and can possibly help.

jbw, John, I would appreciate a more considerate manner of addressing us developers. It is probably quite easy to remember the printer settings, so I'll tag it with easy-fix. Since the work-around is quite simple (if annoying), it has a low priority. I find it very depressing and discouraging to read both your posts, and by those you have lost your chance of having me fix it.

Many thanks in advance! My workaround for now is that I make a PDF-document of the drawing I want to print (print to a PDF-printer). After that I print it using a PDF-reader (Adobe Acrobat Reader and the like). That does the trick, but it 's not the way it should be.

With regards,
Pieter

I agree with jbw (office-jbw), how can this be tagged as low, I'm having the same issue with an epson TX235W, inkscape simply ignores printer settings, this is lame, and the worst part is that googling the problem I see it's been around since like 3 yers ago!!! give me a break, how can anybody use open source when this things are not important, and then the developers come with "oh you hurt my feelings, now I won't fix it" c'mon people....

Derar Johan Engelen,

You are wrong if you think "It is probably quite easy to remember the printer settings". I'm sure it is not possible to do it.

Did you ever read my original post https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/491231/comments/7? Did you consider it annoying? IMO it just describes pure facts, without emotions. I've posted it to help you to make your software better. And it is really frustrating to observe how someone marked this serious problem as a "duplicate" of another (less important) bug. It obviously isn't a duplicate, because one is about lack of printing while another regards only volatile settings. I'm a software developer from 1978 and never met such person like you, till now. I think you lose sight of the true goal focusing on the tip of your nose. I'm always grateful for bug reports, as a precious help for my work and never felt punched.

I believe that the author of https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/491231/comments/8 may be right, but my GTK+ ecperience is too weak to prove that.

Frankly, I don't care if you improve Inkscape or not, because i've stopped to use it and now it is only your problem, not mine, so you can't punish me that way.

I think that is why Open Source Software is so attractive to me.

If I found anything not good in a commercial product, for example, if it cannot remember the default printer, I have no way to improve it, even it may be just an easy-fix.

However, if it is an open source software, even I cannot fix it by myself, I can ask my friends for helps, I can ask foss developers for helps, or I can pay someone to fix a problem if it really annoys me. Things can be solved by efforts as it is open source.

Same issue here, My documet preference are A4 paper and also my default printer settings are A4 paper,
but when I hit print it suggest that it is legal paper size,
which i allways need to change and is pretty annoying.
