Bug Description

Please upgrade "acroread" package (Adobe Reader) to the latest upstream version, which is 9.5.3:
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/9.x/9.5.3/enu/
(though I don't recommend users to install the upstream DEB package directly, as its packaging quality is quite poor).

It's also a good idea to include Adobe Reader Asian font pack into the Ubuntu package:
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/9.x/9.1/misc/

As for now, the freshest Adobe Reader version found in Ubuntu repositories is an outdated acroread 9.5.1-1precise1, and it's not only outdated, but also has some serious packaging errors:
1) it has some incorrect dependencies, which make it non-installable on amd64 systems due to multiarch problems (see bug #990761);
2) the source package contains not only Adobe Reader 9.5.1 English version inside, but also obsolete 9.4.2 German, French and Japanese versions (needs some research, can result in some security problems etc.).

For Ubuntu Quantal & Raring, Adobe Reader seems to be completely missing from Ubuntu repositories, i. e. "partner" repository.

This bug is tagged needs-packaging which identifies it as a request for a new package in Ubuntu. As a part of the managing needs-packaging bug reports specification, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/Specs/NeedsPackagingBugs, all needs-packaging bug reports have Wishlist importance. Subsequently, I'm setting this bug's status to Wishlist.

It seems that maintainer this package is orphaned. I tried to provide a PPA for the package but I deleted it upon request from Launchpad.

I would gladly help someone with commit rights to update the package. If a developer reads this please let me know. (On a personal note, it is a big deal that such an important package as Acrobat Reader isn't really available in Ubuntu.)

Anyway I don't know how to build it on amd64 arch...

I tried to do this, too, but unfortunately this seems to violate PPA's ToS: https://answers.launchpad.net/launchpad/+question/216665 . So an official repo solution is highly desirable.

That's easy. There is a patch in related duplicate bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acroread/+bug/998837 . A complete packaging example for 9.5.1 see: https://launchpad.net/~landronimirc/+archive/experimental/+sourcepub/2641632/+listing-archive-extra . But again this should really be fixed in the official repos.

Is the Importance "Wishlist" only kidding or do you mean this seriously?
I have changed over from opensuse to ubuntu lts be course of the long term service.
And now I must realize, that my systems are using acroread 9.4.7 from 10/5/2011???
I have realized this, as my last opensuse systems are updated to 9.5.3 today.
So I would vote for "urgent" repair....
Thanks.

It's an automatic kidding of Launchpad bugtracker.
