Zim

Many questions

Asked by wdx

Sorry for bad English. Thank you so much for this wonderful program. I've been using it for several months.

My configuration:
Win7 Pro RUS SP1
python-2.7.1
PyGTK 2.22
zim-0.52

Zim run through the python:
unpack the source, run setup.py install, renamed zim.py to zim.pyw
run through zim.pyw

1. Does not work Quick Note
after trying to add from the tray menu i see this
http://i042.radikal.ru/1107/68/e4b03c5edcc0.png

2. Take the opportunity of global change settings to show the date in the whole program: task lists, calendar...
In the Russian-speaking countries, we are first date then month then year (31.07.2011)

3. I can not open multiple notebooks by simply not opening a second notebook when i try.

4. When i open a branch in a new window does not work change the text in this window.

5. After the downtime, when not using it for some time but the program is running, stop running all hot keys.

6. Explain please how do I add an external application to edit the inserted image?

7. Those who do not use the English layout as default it is very difficult to add this symbols @, #, $, ^, &, « », < >. I have to constantly switch keyboard to English and then again in Russian. Please add to the wiki alternative characters, as is done with task lists that can be added by ( ), [ ].

8. It does not work paste text through third-party utilities, such as through Type it Easy http://www.type-it-easy.com/

9. If the tag type Russian letters it does not work

10. After renaming the branch from lowercase to uppercase I had two branches: one with the upper case with other lower

11. After copying the new TXT file in the folder with the database, it does not appear until I'm not going to create a new thread

12. Please add the ability to use special characters (@, #, $, ^, etc) in the names of the branches, it will sort them in a convenient manner

13. When i run the ZIM window always opens not on the screen, but as a slightly left and above

14. Add the ability to insert a light gray text for notes that would not immediately conspicuous

THANKS!

Afraid the tray icon is not well supported on windows. This is a known issue
on windows.

As far as I am aware it uses this setting already everywhere. I'm european
myself, so I never use the US style month-day-year at all. In what screen do
you see the date in US style ?

How do you open it ? From the tray icon, the File menu or from running the
program again ?

I'm sorry, but I do not understand your meaning.

Which hot keys ?

In the "Open With" menu there is "Open With Other Application". You can use
that to add more external commands.

Afraid it will not be possible to use other characters for the wiki code.
But there are keybindings to change formatting etc. without using those
special characters - these are in the Edit menu. These keybindings for the
menu items you can change already.

Can it be this issue: https://bugs.launchpad.net/zim/+bug/783388 ?

I think I have a test case with Czech characters that works OK. Can you give
an example?

Sounds like a bug - please open a bug report (1 report per issue)

There is the action "Update Index" in the Tools menu for this.

This is not possible, these are not supported in file names.

That is not something controlled by zim, but done by windows it self.

In which case would you use this ?

14.
I want to make a note after the job
but it must be such so as not to stand out but rather it must be hard to see
for example why the job has been canceled

How you plan to do something more comfortable to work with ZIM in Windows? Or ZIM will continue to evolve primarily for nix users?

1. Quick note in Windows do not work, the problem is not in the system tray.

Ah OK - yes that is because of the sorting. If I show them the other way
around it is not sorted properly.

For this kind of issue it may also be due to the gtk install. We have seen
some issue like this in the past, but with the latest windows installer it
was gone due to a fix in gtk itself.

Yes if you open in a new window it is read-only and you can not edit it.
This is described in bug #306256.

What do you call a "hot key" - the keys for menu items or something else ?

Open With -> Other Application and then fill in the path for the paint.exe
file.

Then I don't know - works fine on my test system. So may still be due to
specific gtk version used.

Can you open a bug report for that ? Thanks.

Why has it to be hard to see ?

I use zim on windows every day at work, so in my opinion it is already
working quite good. Unfortunately windows is more difficult to program for
than linux because it does not have the same interfaces.

PS. please keep original text in the replies - this way it is more difficult
to remember the context of each reply -- especially if you put 14 items in 1
mail.

I mean shortcuts for editing text (like ctrl+b, etc)

For example, I have several jobs and a job is a brief job description:
[ ] Task 1
description which should not be evident
[ ] Task 2
[ ] Task3

description of the problem should be less noticeable than the task

// I use zim on windows every day at work, so in my opinion it is already

The main problem is the complexity of installation and the program's launch in a python it is inconvenient and difficult for ordinary users.

Some keys, like Ctrl-B will be disabled when the text window does not have
focus. But others like Ctrl-N should always work.

If none of them work I suspect another Gtk issue - have not seen such an
issue myself.

There is an installer avaialble to make it easy. I know it is not always up
to date with the latest version, but this is a volunteer project, so we
depend on people willing to spend some time on it. Myself I am busy enough
with the program itself, so I leave the packages and isntallers to other
people.
