translation of facets in rotating tunnel drilling machine

Asked by Vadim

There is a model tunneling machine, which moves in the surrounding solid medium (such as a rock massive). Model feature is that the surface of the cylindrical shell had movers (shaped like a threaded outer surface). In the process of modeling is necessary to clarify the following: in the real condition by applying only torque to the cylindrical shell (and thus by the rotation of the shell) interact with the surrounding rock massive and movers automatically appear the movement forward of the cylindrical shell (process is similar to tightening the bolt into the nut when the bolt applied torque, but the bolt while still moving forward in the interaction of its thread and thread the nut). The question is: in the simulation of the process in the program YADE while rotating shell and interaction between the movers and rock massive the movement forward is appear automaticly? Can be paraphrased as follows: whether the simulated environment in interaction with imported into the model objects to move them?

Hello,

it is common in Yade that you have fixed surface, also common is that you
have moving surface, but the motion is prescribed a-priori, regardless
interactions. To have a surface, that reacts on simulation progress (like
acting forces), you have basically two options:
- use prescribed motion, but you will change parameters of the motion
according to the simulation progress (i.g. changing velocity of the surface
according to acting forces)
- I am not sure it this would work, but you could create a clump from the
surface and set manually mass and inertia to it and then use it as an
ordinary particle

is this what you want to know (I am not sure if I got your question
correctly)?

cheers
