computer configuration

Asked by Luc Scholtès

Hi all,

Sorry in advance if this is not the right place for that, but I plan to buy a computer mostly for YADE use and I have very little experience on computer's performances. For instance, between those two configurations:

1) http://h41111.www4.hp.com/new_workstations/adlanding/uk/en/z600_details.html

2) http://h41111.www4.hp.com/new_workstations/adlanding/uk/en/z800.html

Do you think that it would be worth buying the expensive one (2) compare to the other (1)?

What is actually the component to favour in regards to YADE structure and behavior?

Thanks for any advice

I started with an Intel Xeon (I think it was 6500) 2,5 years ago. Then (1 year ago) I got a new computer with an i7 core. I would definitely prefer the i7 technology! For details see here:

I got 2-3 times higher calculation speed with the i7 (although cpu frequency is nearly the same) in DEM applications!

Hi,

I agree with Christian, my Intel i7 gives also the fastest result.
i5 is a little behind, but also a good choice.

But 24/7 DEM-simulations are really a stress-tests for machines.
Be sure you have a guarantee for CPU and motherboard :)
