1.0.4 client freezes--100% cpu usage

Asked by LarryK

1.0.4 client and server.
1 display, 1 full screen layout.

rss feed with 0 min update, followed by a plain text screen. The rss feed is actually a static rss file on the web server--I'm testing the rss display capabilities of xibo.

Client is WinXP sp 2.

All will work fine for awhile, ranging from 10 min to 90 min. But then the client will freeze. Sometimes freezes with word "Loading" other times freezes while showing the plain text.

Using cntl-alt-del shows that "Application xibo client is not responding"
cpu on client is 100%

Xibo server is still responsive via a web browser and seems to be fine.

killing xibo client and then restarting it repeats the cycle. -- No need to change or reset anything on server.

I can supply any further information desired. Your help is VERY much appreciated!

Thanks,

Larry

Hi Larry

1.0.5 which is in testing now fundamentally changes the way Tickers are handled. I'd hold fire on your testing until you have that installed. I think you'll find it solves that.

Cheers

Thanks Alex.

Can I assist with the testing?

I'm also trying to improve things by upgrading the system to IE 8 (and components). The client system was at IE 7.

Hi Larry...

You can certainly assist with the testing - the aim is to have our testing completed by New Years Eve.

The 1.0.5 binaries can be downloaded here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/353651/Xibo/Xibo%20Client%201-0-5%20v2.zip
and a replacement XMDS.php (for the web server side) from here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/353651/Xibo/xmds.php

As Alex said the Ticker/Text stability has been significantly improved in this next release - so hopefully your problem will be solved.

Cheers!

Thanks, I'll download it now.

In the meanwhile, I upgraded the client to IE 8.0. Unfortunately no appreciable difference. Still froze, after about 90 min, with "Loading"

CPU pegged at 100%. Windows process monitor reporting "not responding"

OK my stupid Windows decided to apply some updates over night so the client stopped running. I've started it running again now 30/12 11:00

After a lot more testing, etherpeeks, and time and help from Alex and Dan, the problem was solved:

I updated the client machine to .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and everything started working perfectly. No more freezes and the network traffic between the client and the server is much much smoother now.

I very much recommend that everyone run .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on their Xibo client machines. It is a free download from Microsoft and includes many bug fixes to the communications libraries of Windows.

See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/aa569263.aspx

Thanks again to Alex and Dan for their help and dedication to creating superb software.
