Xibo client ran under pre-XP login..

Asked by Shahid

Here's a doozie for you guys;

Our Director of IT is a paranoid schizo-nazi who prefers that if we have to have unattended machines out on the network (for such services as this would require) that they not be auto-logged in for network security reasons (nevermind that all of these machines are in physically secure locations ;) . Now since the DoIT can make my life a living hell, I am trying to comply before I can roll Xibo out to production. Unfortunately, for most of our applications to run, they required such an auto-login setup...until recently when I started using XP's group policy startup-script settings to run applications before a user presses ctrl+alt+del. This works well for all of our other apps with the exception, of course, being the Xibo client.

I know this is probably abnormal use, but it would enhance client security if I could figure this out. I noticed that when logged in, Xibo calls other applications to run (ie; PPT, iexplore, java) media, but will not call those apps if its running as a System account at pre-login.

Any ideas?

Thanks, as usual guys, Xibo rocks!

I don't know anything about why that works or not, but couldn't you make up a logon account using Xibo client as the shell application? That way if someone quits the client windows will log the machine off - and there's no explorer shell running so the machine is pretty useless anyhow.

Thinking more I wonder if this is a security restriction in Windows that's preventing one process loading another?

Cheers

Alex

Hm. Could be a default security restriction. I'll give the logon shell a try. If anyone has any interest in this, let me know and I'll post my results back after further testing.

Thanks, Shahid
