Client fails to start - EventType: clr20r3 - system.nullreferenceexception

Asked by pbiggs

Both the XiboClient and XiboClientOptions fail to start up and give the error screen in the attachment.

This happens on two out of the three machines I've tried. The one that works (and works well!!) is a modern dual core Dell intel box. The two that don't are an XP install on Sun VirtualBox (host is a quad core 2.4GHz intel box with 500Mb of memory assigned to the VM) and XP on a Celeron 2.4GHz with 1Gb of RAM.

Looking at other applications that fail with this error message it seems that it can be put down to one thread of the application trying to access another before it had been initialised - is it possible that the main application here is trying to access the splash screen and it's not working properly on slower machines?? See for instance http://bytes.com/groups/net-c/531075-randmo-crashes-eventtype-clr20r3-system-nullreferenceexception

I've tried removing all the

Sorry, message got cut short ...

I've tried removing all the programs that might be slowing things down - AV, domain etc. etc. but still no joy.

I'm not a windows developer, and I'm certainly not a C# / .Net person, so it's going to be difficult for me to do much debugging - but it's going to be difficult for me to deploy Xibo if I need new high power machines to do it!!

Pete

ps The systems all have .Net 2.0 installed - the non-VM machine also has .Net 1.1, .Net 3.5 and VisStudio ,Net 2003 Pro. The OS is a fully patched XP SP3 (with IE8), both with & without Office 2007 and Flash 10. If necessary I can re-install the OS on any of the machines.

Hi. It's a known issue with virtual box. There's a bug filed for it but it's a windows api call that causes the crash. Alex

But that's only one of the installs - and I'm not particularly bothered that the VirtualBox version doesn't work (it was just for playing with).

As I said there's another machine (a celeron 2.4GHz with 1Gb of memory) that is coming up with the exact same error.

OK. I've just installed XP SP3 on another machine (a P4), installed flash, .Net2.0 and Xibo_client and it works fine. There must be something odd with the other box I was using.

Ok. I'm not in a position to look at if this week. I have xibo in production on both via mini itx systems and intel atom based machines so i doubt it's performance related per se. Cheers. Alex

Hi, I just ran into the same error on a brand new intel atom box running windows xp sp3 with .net framework 3.5

Any suggestions on what I can do to resolve this? I've tried reinstalling .net framework, upgrading to ie8 and no luck.

Thanks in advance.

OK - and as with the original you can't get in to the settings either? What other .net Frameworks do you have installed? I'm pretty sure 1, 1.1, 2 and 3.5 are all independent of eachother.

Is Office installed? Powerpoint Viewer? What version of Windows Media Player? Flash?

Cheers

Alex

orrect, I am not able to get into the settings or the client.

When the client tries to launch It comes back with fatal error initialising
the application.

When I try to launch the settings, it comes back with xiboclient has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience.

No office, powerpoint viewer, windows media player 9

Flash wasn't installed, I just installed and didn't make a difference.

I originally installed .net framework 3.5 sp1, which installed .net
framework 3.0 sp3 and 2.0 sp2. When the error occured, I uninstalled .net
framework 3.5 sp1 and 3.0 sp3, so that only 2.0 sp2 remained. Same issue.
I just put 3.5 sp1 back on, which installed 3.0 sp3 again.

I did reboot in between the uninstalls and installs.

This has been resolved. I reinstalled XP followed by .net framework 2.0 and adobe flash player 10.

I am now able to launch the client as well as the options screen.

I will now move forward with running windows updates and see if anything breaks xibo.
