Can an online player be setup to play offline?

Asked by Mike H

I need to set a player to run around the clock with the same layout without change for 6 months. Can I take a xibo 1.4.2 and ubuntu player setup on the network. Schedule the layout to play for a year. Then remove the player from the display listing and remove the server url: from the player?

Should I have a problem?

I've never tried it at that kind of duration.

You'd be better off configuring it for offline USB update and then using
the offline download client to prepare a USB stick for it to transfer the
layout.

That way the client isn't trying to connect to a server all the time.

"offline download client"? Interesting. Is this available for only Linux-based clients, or also for Windows-based clients?

Hi Mike

Only the Linux client has the offline mode, but the offline download client
works on Windows or Mac.

The latest version is 1.4.0 from memory. It'll be on the Xibo Launchpad
page under all downloads

Hi Mike

You run the offline download client, add a new display in the server using
that, then schedule the content exactly as you would for an online client.

Then when you're ready, use the ODC to download the content on to the root
folder of a memory stick.

Then on the actual offline client machine, configure the client for offline
mode, set the XMDS license key to match the one generated in the offline
download client (it'll be whatever the folder name is that was created on
the memory stick) and then run the client.

Plug the stick in, and you should see a green dot appear in the corner of
the screen. Once that dissapears, the update is complete and you can
remove the stick.

The client will run the content from the stick per the schedule.

If you need to make further updates during the 6 months, you just make the
changes on the server, download them with the ODC to a stick and then plug
the stick in to the client.,
