Support for IR-blaster to turn screen on and off?

Asked by Dale E. Martin

I'd like to be able to turn the screen on and off based on the Xibo schedule. It's a regular TV and it seems like when it sleeps, it powers down. I was wondering if there were any plans to support MCE-compatible IR blasters to allow control of the display?

Thanks

You want to be able to wake the display up with a remote control? I don't really understand the question :-)

Xibo now has support for shell commands which can be used to shutdown the client on a schedule, we also support wake on LAN which can be used to wake the client up on a schedule.

It is also possible to turn the TV on and off via a RS232 shell command (if the TV supports that).

So there are a few options - where would an IR blaster come into play?

Hi Dan,
Yes, our screen is a consumer grade 42" television. I am under the
impression that it does not have DPMS support. I guess I need to
confirm that though. We have a shared client/server so currently our
plan is to leave the machine up 24/7. We did spec it out to be
relatively low power with that in mind.

Thanks,

I guess I still dont understand where the IR blaster comes into play...

I would have thought that your client would connect to your TV via a serial interface and could then turn the tv on and off using a shell script.

You're saying that consumer grade TVs have a serial interface? Do you
mean HDMI or something else? I'm sorry - I'm confused too.

Thanks,

I think you need a hardware below:
- IR sender or transmitter
this equipment can be connected and control by server to send IR command to TV for controlling.

I'm saying that Xibo has support for sending shell commands to the underlying OS (be it windows or ubuntu) and therefore anything that can be controlled via the shell can be controlled by Xibo.

As for support on TV's, I have no idea. We have certainly encountered TV's with a serial RS232 interface which we have used to turn the TV ON and OFF via a shell command from the client.

If you have an IR blaster plugged in, pointed at the tv and you can control it via a shell command then I don't see any reason why that wouldn't work - but we haven't tried it ourselves.

Can you help with this problem?
