Slow rss feed marquee for international character

Asked by jai555

Hi there again, (lots of questions today)

I'd like to say that xibo marquee my 'Thai' rss feed very slowly.

e.g. you can try http://www.manager.co.th/RSS/Home/Breakingnews.xml
or http://breakingnews.nationchannel.com/rss/breakhot.xml

these feeds are in Thai...

After insert these feed in the show , the marquee will be very slow and also other boxes will be slower too!

But there is no problem for marquee in English... i've tried http://rss.news.yahoo.com/rss/topstories the result is very perfect...

What's the problem???

Thank you very much

As Dan suggests in your other thread, you need to upgrade the client to the pre-release version of 1.0.7 which may fix this outright.

If it doesn't, you can adjust the scroll speed on the same form that you put the rss feed url in on. Lower numbers cause the text to scroll faster.

@Alex - I've added this Thai feed to our test suite, handy to have more unicode characters to test with.

@jai - I've tested your "manager.co.th" feed on my test client and it works as expected with the binaries I linked you to on your other question. #101735

I've made a layout with your feed and an english feed one above the other and set them to scroll left speed 30.

They move at exactly the same speed as I would expect.

Can you confirm on your client that with two tickers arranged like that the thai feed runs slower than the english one please.

Well, i've recorded my signage so that you can watch and maybe could realize the problem more clearly...

it is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDHTCjPl6SU

A few note for this record is that....
1.I always manually remove the ./library folder to make sure that client refetch new presentation... the refetch is not a big problem when comparing to slow motion problem...
2.The panda-elephant frame is maintained... i don't change any of its property... you should focus on weather this frame is rotated or not...
3.I notice that if i don't marquee the rss, the panda-elephant frame is still rotated properly... but..the problem should be clearly presented when i set the marquee to 'Left' and let it be one line marquee only...

Another small problem is that 'How can i exit the client without directly 'End task' it?

Can you answer these questions for me:

1. Did you install the 1.0.7 test binaries we sent you to try? You should download the zip file and replace the files in your Xibo installation directory.

Can you do these things:

1. Setup your layout as it appears in the video at 5:30
2. Run the client
3. Quit the client
4. Zip up the files in your client library folder and send them to <email address hidden>

Hi Xibo team!
The problem is still there... I've created new layout to rotate on text (no pictures), but the problem is still there, freezing rotation is still occurred...
I've sent you snapshots of my layout, the one that you should focus on is 'snap3'... snap3 composed of 1 rotation text and one 'thai' marquee, it shows that 'rotation textbox' becomes freezed and 'thai' marquee speed is lower than it should be... whilst,snap4 i changed rss to fetch from yahoo rss, then everything is fine, marquee speed is very fast and text rotation is working!...

I'd explain you a little bit... snap1 is composed of only one text box rotation, it works fine, rotate as it is programmed... snap2, i added one rss feed with no marquee, text box is still rotating ... the problem is at snap3

I'm sure that i'm using your 1.0.7 client and IE8 on WinXP... I don't think it is hardware problem...

Hope you would get more detail and help me finish this project...

Thank you very much...

When the scrolling speed is slow, can you see what the CPU usage is on the client PC please.

Can you also open the client library folder (with the client still running slowly) and switch to detail view, then sort the files by date and see if any of the files are being created/deleted over and over again.

I've looked through the files you sent and I don't see any problem with any of them, and I've tested the layout I created using the same feeds as you on my work PC and it scrolls and rotates the elephant-pandas as expected.

Can you also try installing .net Framework 3.5 and .net Framework 3.5sp1 to see if that improves things any.

@ Jai: The problem we have is that we can't reproduce this on any of the machines we have access to.

@Dan: Debug client?

Alex

Revision history for this message
Dan Garner (dangarner) said :

I dont think the debug client will help here.... it has got to be the Xibo hosted IE process that is causing the CPU load.

@jai:
If you remove the RSS feed, or replace with an English feed does it work as expected? (Judging by previous comments I think the answer to this will be yes)

When the client is running, can you go to the temporary file location (Start -> Run -> %Temp%) and order the files by Date Modified descending.

There will be a .TMP file in there called something like tmp3a5a.tmp. This is the file Xibo uses to play your RSS. Can you Open this file in IE (Right click, Open with) and see if the RSS scrolls quickly or slowly.

Well,well,well....

Refer to @Dan, I look through %TEMP%, each .tmp file is for each region, right? I have to copy the text inside and put it in new html file to run it on ie... The result is that rotation text is still!!!! no movement... and the scrolling marquee is slow too!!!! It is clear that the result is from html generated itself... so... we are closer to the problem now...

In a few minutes, i will send you my 2 html files....

The scrolling feed html (test1.htm) runs fine on my machine. Uses around 5% CPU but scrolls smoothly and fast.

The second file (test2.htm) is supposed to be static. The client creates an html file for each text media item and then swaps them in place as the region changes. You shouldn't expect test2.htm to rotate on its own.

I think then the problem is with your PC somehow - in that Internet Explorer is unable to scroll this smoothly for you.

Have a look at its general configuration - ensure you have latest graphics drivers etc

That might be possible. I'd need to set something up specially. I don't see what it would prove though - the feed rss and html are parsed and created client side.

> 2.Do you know logmein? i'd create an account for you to access my computer and diagnose what's wrong with my client?

Again we may want to do that, but we wouldn't use logmein. With all respect, you're not paying for the software or our support time. While we'd love to make the software work for you, we'll dictate the terms on which that happens. We're not obliged to make it work for you.

The javascript isn't the issue though.

You're forgetting that the same HTML/JS scrolls the same feed here with no problems at all.

Either your PC isn't capable of the CPU cycles it takes to render scrolling text at the speed you want, or there's something fundamentally wrong with the version of Windows you have access to.

Did you go through and make sure all your drivers are up to date / Windows Update up to date etc?

First I'd check if there are newer drivers for your graphics card - go to the manufacturers website and check.

Then check if hardware accelleration is enabled on your graphics card. http://www.deskshare.com/Resources/articles/dmc_turnoffhardwareacceleration.aspx Try various positions for the slider and see if that makes any difference.

Then finally if you're using an onboard graphics card see if there's an option in the bios to increase the video memory available for your graphics card.

Now, xibo client runs fine for 1 thai rss marquee and ( other text rotation or english rss marquee)... but if i show 2 thai rss marquees at the same time the marquees will be slow....however this is not going to be big problem, because i can avoid not to use 2 thai rss marquees at the same time....

Hi Xibo Team,
Now the problem is solved by changing regional setting to fully english as Alex said in previous reply.... I mean to remove all thai setting out of the computer...

So I'd finish the problem here...

Thanks alot Alex and Dan
