I'm sorry Andrew I can't give you much as I don't understand much. I used the (Wubi) Windows installer and installed version 11.10. All was working well. I had download and installed some programs from the Ubuntu Software site. A few updates had downloaded and I had installed them. I noticed (blinking icon in the icon bar) that other updates had been downloaded. I did not installed them yet. I was listening to a Bible passage being read from BibleGateway.Com and the screen went blank and the program backed out and restarted. I noticed when I logged back in that the blinking icon had disappeared and I could no longer enter Ubuntu One or Ubuntu Software downloads. When I clicked on those icons that actuated but the program never loaded. I also noticed that if I tried to download any of the software that's available trough dash home after clicking the software I wanted to look at I got kicked back to the desktop. I have not been able to find the updates that were ready to install. When I click on updates the app opens for a split second and I notice there are no updates listed.

Thanks for your help. Perhaps the easiest way is to uninstall through Windows them re-install through Windows...do you know if the boot loader reverts back to only the Windows boot when Ubuntu has been un-installed? Thank you, Tom Wake

Uninstalling Wubi (from add/remove programs select "Ubuntu", or run \ubuntu\uninstall-wubi.exe) will remove Ubuntu from the windows boot manager and revert back to only booting Windows. (Wubi does not actually modify the bootloader).

But I don't think reinstalling wubi is required to fix this. It sounds like something crashed. Try going to a command line (Ctrl+Alt+T) and running updates manally:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

The first line will refresh the list of available updates, and the second one will tell you if there are any updates that can be applied to your machine. Also if there are errors they will likely show.

Note, if will prompt you for your password after the first command, but no letters or feedback appears while you are typing it.

Thank you. I used both sudo apt-get update & sudo apt-get upgrade as you advised. I got no errors on the "update", but the error "Extracting templates from packages: 100% Preconfiguring packages ...dpkg: error: parsing file '/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 25862 package 'ubuntu-mono': field name `Depends' must be followed by colonE: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2) on the "upgrade" process I ran.
I also used "sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -f install; lsb_release -a" that had been suggested by actionparsnip (andrew-woodhead666) and got this response Reading package lists... DoneReading package lists... DoneBuilding dependency tree Reading state information... Done0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 140 not upgraded. No LSB modules are available.Distributor ID: UbuntuDescription: Ubuntu 11.10Release: 11.10Codename: oneirictom@ubuntu:~$
I then got into the Ubuntu Software and attempted to install "7Zip" and got " The installation or removal of a software package failed. installArchives() failed: dpkg: error: parsing file '/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 25862 package 'ubuntu-mono': field name `Depends' must be followed by colon "
So, I thank you for you time and knowledge. Any further hints? I'm not skilled at this and really want a system that "works" 999 out of a 1000 times. ? Thank you, Tom Wake
