Not a full image created and subfolders missing

Asked by David Smith

I have finally been successful of creating an image with Win32Diskimager-0.9.5, it did take a long time to create the cloned image of another fully working SD card (both same type) and in excess of several hours. When I inserted the cloned SD card into the raspberry pi the raspberry pi booted successfully but my own programs did not exist on the cloned card and are missing. The raspbian OS appears all intact but none of the other applications I have configued like SSMTP, Motion etc. Is there a reason for this and how can I create a full cloned image which includes my other applications and sub folders?

There should be absolutely no reason for the cloned image to not be the same. Unlike other utilities, WIn32DiskImager is filesystem agnostic. It only supports reading/writing raw data from the physical device. It has no way of manipulating a filesystem within an image.

Thank you for your reply Tobin, but now I have the mystery why my files have not been picked u within the image and transferred to the new SD card. Do you think it could be a partition issue?

It is possible that your image has your data on a persistent storage area that isn't being closed properly when you shut down. Again, this program really doesn't care about partitions or directories contained within, it reads the raw data from your device from beginning to end. It doesn't read individual partitions and doesn't care about hidden data, or even unformatted areas. It reads the entire device, beginning to end.

I would check your original device to make sure the data is visible between boots. It may be something as simple as a manual mount of persistent data areas or some other step you are overlooking.

Hi Tobin,

I still had no success with win32-image-writer after following your advice to the best of my ability and my own files were not transferred with the image. But for your information I found another application called HDD Raw Copy Tool and it worked perfectly and surprisingly quickly.

Thanks again.

Am I still having a problem? Well yes and no, yes in that win32-image-maker does not include my files and folders for some unknown reason, but no because HDD Raw does include my files and folders when creating a backup image.

Is there a way you can somehow post a copy of these images for me to examine? 1 read w/ win32diskimager and the other with your other tool? If this is an actual bug, I need to resolve it (although I still don't know how it can be).

The images would be rather large Tobin, how can I get these to you?

Probably the easiest is to convert this to a bug report and attach them to the bug report. Use a compression utility like Winzip or 7Zip to compress them first.
