Why not normal OpenStreetMap?

Asked by mindaugasd

I was suprised how great OpenStreetMap was when I first used uNav many years ago. Very useful thing. This map shows where everything is: shops, libraries everything. I was very happy to use it.
Then it was removed and replaced with simple map because of server issue.
And I try today again, and I see a lot of maps to choose, but still where is the original detailed map?
Since Google maps is better, now I use google maps (other phone) and have to go directly to OpenStreepMaps website to get detailed info. I would love to get this info on uNav and use it, instead of using website directly.
Why is better map not available on uNav?
It looks like it I asked similar question few years ago https://answers.launchpad.net/unav/+question/296056 . Then it was the server issue, is it still the case?

Hi,

The OSM can not be used from the OSM server. We would need to use another
free tiles server and there is not any one for free. That's all. uNav is
using only free and free(dom) maps.

Best regards.

I have very little knowledge of what I'm about to say here, but...

I'm running my own Nextcloud server at home. A recent development was the addition of the Maps App; https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/maps

During set-up, the Admin needs to go onto their choice of OSRM, GraphHopper, and/or Mapbox and get an API key in order to have the routing work. (OSRM has an option of Show Demo Server vs your own https://my.osrm.server.org:5000/route/v1 type profile URL's)

Would it be possible to have some way of users of uNav getting a personalized setting/login/API key that they can enter into the settings of uNav such that it pulled in content from one of a variety of sources?

My Nextcloud Maps app brings in the tiles from OpenStreetMap

Hi,
No, I'm so sorry. The navigation APIs are really complicate to change
between them, then I'll not put that in the app. In other way, I want uNav
as simple as possible, and allow to enter an API, for me is not simple :)
A hug but thanks for the idea.
