major prob? files gone!

Asked by mastermindchaos

Alright I try to stay calm. While updating to lucid my PC just shut down and didn't boot anymore. What could I do but installing a brand new lucid version - my personal folder with lots of work documents would be lost, but no problem! I always used Ubuntu1 and therefor thought the system would easily synchronize my all my files.
Wrong! Not only did it NOT synchronize them, but when I finally got it to do anything, half of my files on Ubuntu1-online storage were GONE!! I suppose it synchronized my yet empty Ubuntu1-folder on my PC just the way it shouldn't! Well I'm a little desparate now, and stopped all Ubuntu1-processes in order not to loose even more data.. Can anybody help me how to synchronize it the right way round and possibly recover the lost files???
Thanks a mil!!
Michael

alright I found a memory stick with not totally-up-to-date copies of the documents, that will do it for the moment. Nevertheless I must say I'm disappointed both with the u1-client and with the support/communication here. Will definitly take more care using this software...

I'm sorry you're having trouble. I beg you have a little patience as
your first request was sent on a day that was a Saturday and a holiday
for a lot of the world. I'm sure we can look into it further on
Monday.

Can you check to see if your files are still visible on the web interface?

Hi John!
Thanks for coming back on me. Well these files are not visible on the web interface anymore as they are gone. Also the storage usage display has retreated from 32% to 17% due to the u1 client syncing my empty folder. Now I have stopped all syncing.. Do you have any idea how I can tell the u1 client to leave the online files alone and rather download them onto the pc? Not mentioning recovery of the lost material...

Sorry to hear that. I can try to recover your files. The recovery process will create a strangely named folder in the root directory.
Please let me know if this is what you would like to do.

Out of curiosity, how did the recovery come out?

Keeping a version history of the files (like dropbox does) prevents such incidents since we can always go back to a previous (non-deleted) version of the files.

Erm, no recovery whatsoever... well I guess that's another lesson in letting go...

Can you help with this problem?
